The block named Card Trick, is it in the public domain?

I remember reading that the block named Card Trick is not in the public domain, a person, I think a man, designed it and it is his. ? Anyone know about the legal use of this block being made into a quilt for sale? I can't find any information but I did read that article.

Hey Sewbug! I never heard of a quilt block having a copyright, but I am kinda new to all this. I do know that a book I have called "1000 Great Blocks" has the card trick block in it and there is no mention of any of the blocks being "owned" by anyone in particular. The author, Maggie McCormick Gordon, of course has the book copyrighted. I wouldn't think that means she now owns the blocks. But, like I said, I'm new to quilting and sure don't know all the details.

      hi
jost googled "card trick block" and came up with over 475 thousand hits.
the first few listed are all different types of quilting sites all using this block, there is no copyright. so i think you are quite safe in using the block in a quilt that you want to sell. i know many patterns for quilts not blocks can be protected by copyright.
      hope this helps

Quilter's Cache and many other websites have copyrighted original blocks. You need permission to use them and usually the rules are listed on the sites how you can use them. All the classic blocks are not copyrighted. I know I read that article someplace about the designer of this block. But if the designer hasn't made a stink about it by now I guess it's free to use.

Anita Grossman Solomon does the card trick block in her Paper Piecing book and teaches it in a class. I think it's one of those classics that has been around forever.

I agree w/ Judy from Ohio. Jeff Gutcheon did design the card trick block back in the 70's. He and Beth (who also wrote The Perfect patchwork Primer, and is now a distinguished and successful fiction writer) were WAY ahead of their time. Their Quilt Design Workbook was by far the most innovative and influential book on contemporary quilting. Things like chain piecing, and new designs such as card trick and many other features were considered great leaps of quilting in a day where all you could find were ditsy calicos. The book still holds up today. Get a hold of a copy (library, ebay, quilt guild library) and you will be quite amazed. They also feature the work of other celebrity quilters of the 70's such as Molly Upton. And as you can probably tell, a great influence on me, and probably why I am a quilter today.

Hi there. I created the Faux Card Trick. It's modeled after the Air Castle Block (Brackman #1704) and so identified in my book. Jeffrey Gutcheon designed the Card Trick. While his and my finished blocks look similar, my design employs squares and rectangles while his Card Trick drawing doesn't. Copyright protection is very important to me. So is making things simpler. I researched blocks 'to pieces' while writing my books.

                All my best,
                Anita Grossman Solomon

I just found a free (online] pattern for it at McCall's Quilting:

                  http://mccallsquilting.com/qb/pattern_902//index.html

                  There is also one at:
                  http://home.howstuffworks.com/card-t...uilt-block.htm

I hope this helps. I may have to try it also! Enjoy!
