very well said.Originally posted by BethMIIf you get quilters together, age differences seem to melt away. We are all searching for the same thing -- for that special quilt to admire, for the great new tool to help us cut, sew and quilt perfectly, for truly wonderful fabric, for new patterns, for luscious colors, for a quilt store we haven't seen before, etc.

I'm with you Gisela! I (think) I made my first quilt about 8-10 years ago? :? Ok you can tell my life's a mess, I can't even remember, BUT I truly believe I've been a quilter all my life... How's that? I loved to play with geometric art toys, colored blocks, mosaic tiles, etc. even when I was really young-- and I think if you found my old schoolwork it would be covered with quilty designs as I doodled in the borders... Some time in the early 80's I actually bought a quilt book and templates (before rotary cutters!) but something kept me from taking the plunge... There were 2 LQS's near me, and I loved to shop for fabric even then, although primarily looking not purchasing, maybe I'm lucky I didn't build a stash then! I really think if someone had only pushed me a little, I'd be a lot farther along than I am now! But my mom & grandmom knitted, embroidered, needlepointed, and sewed garments (minimal) so that's where my exposure was, (and I can do all of those things except knit...) Oh well, taking it from here... I'm 48, my paternal grandmother lived to be 103, so I'm not even middle aged yet! :lol:I sure wish I had started sooner -- there are so many things that I want to try!

Ya know, when I watched the latest episode I noticed when Alex and Ricky were talking about when they graduated high school and it suddenly hit me - they are the same age as my parents! Now Ricky, Alex, please take this as a compliment - I never thought about your ages at all till today because you are both so very young at heart 8) It put me in mind of this thread though because I do not think of my parents as old (come on, Dad and his gf just had another baby last August
ops: ), I do not think of myself as old (although my hips and back make me feel it sometimes), and I do not think of any of you as old either. Age is a state of mind!!

I started hand quilting (on a large frame) around age 13- mom & grandma on either side "monitoring" the size of my stitches. Believe me, if the stitch size wasn't just right I had to take it out. That was many moons ago. Took a quilting hiatus for few years while raising a son, then went back to nursing school to get my degree. Now I tell co-workers that work just gets in the way of my hobby- Quilting. Piecing lots of quilts now by machine and having a great time. This year is the big 50 so I'm thinking of taking up hand applique to see if I can accomplish that. That's what I really love about nursing and quilting- many areas of interest and always something new to learn. I'm telling myself I'll be young forever because "It's always a New Day". Rena

I'm 55.
I come across more 'elderly' quilters than young ones, but that's only natural. The younger quilters are very busy with bringing up children and holding down jobs. Once retired, there is so much more time for messing about with fabrics, my older friends (sorry, Brenda!) tell me. I too intend to go to more shows and workshops when I no longer have to work.

I have recently joined a new group ( guild in the US) and I was chatting to the lady sitting next to me at the last meeting and she was showing me the Sun Bonnet Sue blocks she was hand appliquing for a member of her family. She leaned towards me and whispered "I'm 83 you know"
Honestly I felt like doing a whoop of joy. I am exactly 20 years younger than her and hope I still have at least 20 years of quilting left. If she can then so can I!!!!From the edge of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood
