I was looking for a long-term hand applique project, and really liked this. I don't have any civil war reproductions in my stash so I'm getting the patterns and fabric kits from Common Threads. I've got to say that I am very pleased with the fabrics they are sending. I love scrappy quilts and some of these blocks have as many as 16 different pieces of fabric, but I see on the web site that they have closed this BOM for new sign-ups.

Is that pic YOUR Civil War Bride Quilt, Margo? I love it! I do love applique. That is one beautiful quilt. Your colors? Designer's colors?

I am PP some of the triangles as they just lend themselves to that method. I don't care for PP by hand - tried and had a mess! so those will mostly be machine constructed. Most of my blocks are hand pieced. I think I counted 31 triangles done and 87 blocks done!

And NO! I am not counting the pieces in the blocks and totaling! Too much detail and takes away from quilting. IMHO.

No, Lynn! I wish mine were done, but I've only gotten 5 blocks finished. The fabrics were chosen by the quilt shop for the kits. And you know me, I've made some small design changes on every block, but I'm mostly using their fabrics.

                Margo,
Are you going to include a groom? Some people over on the CWB blog have them. Maybe he could look like Cap'n John!

I haven't decided about a groom yet, but my bride is actually wearing a white dress instead of the colors in the pattern! If I used Capt'n John as a model it might start some unfounded rumors! LOL!!

Well, since I'd never heard about the Civil War Bride Quilt until Margo mentioned and posted it, I'm once again being educated by TQS. That is such a beautiful and intricate quilt.....and then discovered while bumping around on the web looking for it and resources, there are many, many, MANY more quilts of the same nature and the nature of DJ. It seems to be the direction of some facets of quilting.

Once again, TQS, our resource for all things (quilting)

                      Lynn,
I think the official name of the quilt is the Bird of Paradise. It's in the American Folk Art Museum's collection. The first time I heard of it, I was cruising applique blogs. What an undertaking!!
