    Need suggestions NOW

I am in need of suggestions for something that is simple for inexperienced sewers yet is pretty and impressive. A simple block with alternating solid blocks is sort of what we have in mind.

A sister in Christ has recently learned that her cancer has returned. We have two small groups who want to participate. We are planning on the ladies writing a scripture verse or message on the solid blocks.

We need to get on this ASAP. Thank you!

Maybe something like this could work? The un-even 9 patch is easy to do. Let me know if you need more instructions.

Thanks for all the great advice over the years...you are one smart cookie about all things quilted.

      Keep posting,

        Mama2TNT,
I am sorry if I broke a proper forum posting rule. I am thinking I should not of broken your thread with a hats off to Margo post. I realize finding a quilt idea for your friend is a very important to you. I am sure many members will follow up Margo's suggestion with more great ideas.

Mama2nt, I like Margo's uneven nine patch. You could use those alternate open space blocks to write your friend an uplifting message.

Thanks for the kudos, Barbara, but the quilt police aren't allowed here, so you can break threads if you want to! However, I suggest that if you post something that others may use the search function for, you might want to start a new topic. I'm also looking forward to seeing what other great ideas are posted for Mama2TNT's project.

A very simple pattern is a double 4 patch- just four patches set with alternate plain squares. Looks nice and is super easy! Kathy

Several of Alex Anderson's books have quilt patterns in them that are easy to do, but look very impressive.

Good luck with the quilt, and I hope your friend will win her battle with this vicious illness.

Another easy quilt that I think looks really nice alternates 9-patch blocks with snowball blocks. The snowball blocks would provide room for messages.

I start all my new quilters off with the rail fence block. You can use the center "rail" as a signature area if your friends want to sign their blocks. It's an easy block and it can be very dramatic.

If you look at my profile, in the pictures is a rail fence quilt that I made as a signature quilt for a friend with cancer. Before I cut the strip sets into blocks, I iron a strip of freezer paper on the back to stabilize it for signing. After I cut the blocks, I draw two lines on the side showing the sewing lines, so people won't sign in the seam allowances.

Thank you all for your suggestions! You are right, Margo. I have been unable to check back here: problems in the neighborhood, scammer took over our computer, can anything else go wrong? I hope not. We have decided on a simple four-patch alternating with a solid white block, which will be the "signing" block. I just finished ironing freezer paper on the back of the white blocks. Progress is being made! Thank, again!

Sounds like a good game plan Joyce! Hope you can post photos when you get it done and that it's a comfort to your friend with cancer.
