Color Theory Class - Session 1

I appreciate the feedback on the chat during the class. That was terrific and would like to address a few of your thoughts and questions. I will also address this in the classes themselves.

Question 1- What size are the squares? That will be your choice since the book gives several size possibilities.
Question 2 - How many weeks are the classes? I am looking at 12 so that I can be as thorough as I can.
Question 3 - Can you mix bright and dull fabrics together? Absolutely. It is what gives a dull quilt its spark.
Question 4 - Can I use batiks? Yes and you can even mix batiks and regular cotton fabrics.
Question 5 - Do you choose the pattern first or the fabric first? Depends, and this will be addressed in class.
Question 6 - Is it harder to pick fabrics when using an old theme fabric? Not necessarily. The same thought process works for all fabrics.

There is so much we will cover throughout the 12 classes. Keep asking the questions and we will get there.

    Hello from Torrance, CA!
I have taken color theory classes and I thought I knew which way I was going to go with this quilt, but inspiration struck and I am going in a completely different direction.

My favorite color is purple. I love Fall colors and lean toward warmer colors. I also love vintage reproduction fabrics with my favorite being 1930's fabric. I am most attracted to traditional quilts (Baltimore album, grandmother's flower garden, etc) and the quilts that I tend to just glace at are modern quilts.

I bought the kit and was trying to decide if I was going to use it as it's not really the fabrics that I love. While searching for some green stem fabric for the BOM, I found the kits from Ricky's Kaleidoscope quilt which I had put into my stash. That's when inspiration struck and I am going outside my box. I am going to use both kits with a light grey background and black/dark grey for borders or binding (see picture). I think it will give it a modern look which is definitely out of my box!

Good for you for going outside your box. Your grouping of fabrics is looking good. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

I'm confused as to what exactly is our "homework". Can someone explain it to me to better understand or did I miss something during the Live show Saturday?

Look at the quilts you have already made. What colors and style of quilts do you gravitate toward? Start to add fabrics or choose fabrics you think you would like to use for this project.

Thank Dee for the insight I received from our first class. I looked at my quilts & fabric & I appear to use a lot of grayed down fabric. I never thought it was ok to add pure colors or shades. I tried on our current quilt & can see the interest in my quilt. I know I love burgundy best so now I will see how that fits with past & future quilts.
Thank you again for essential insight. See you Sat

      Lynne,
Really lovely block! However, on my iPad it comes off as a monochromatic scheme with blues. I love the contrast and scale between the fabrics.

Monochromatic blocks. I decided to make a few of each. I tried using a grey as a neutral background. Perhaps Dee you could talk about greys as it is hard yet to distinguish much more than whether the grey is warm or cool. Will choosing just warm or cool work if our other colours are either warm or cool?

Monochromatic blocks second set. Again I made them with light, medium, dark and grey backgrounds, just to see how that would look. I think the value placement is better than it was in my first set of monochromatic blocks. I guess we should get better at it as we go along shouldn't we.
