Dragon Quilt
Ok I have finally worked up the nerve to do an art quilt. If that is what you want to call it. My son's girl friend drew a picture of a beautiful dragon on some muslin for me. Then I would just go from there. I know I probably should start smaller but that is just not me. How ever now I look at this and think where to start. Any suggestions? :?: RachelTags: None

The first time I tried anything a bit more fancy, I pieced a background and then appliquéd on top. In order to made it easy for me I ironed the fabric for the appliqué onto bondaweb, then cut out the shapes, ironed them onto the background fabric and machine-stitched around the edges with a narrow zigzag. I was very happy with the result.

Rachel go back and view show number 202 with Vicki Pignatelli. I have found her ideas to be very helpful. I don't always follow her technique exactly but do use her pieceing ideas. Maybe if you used a combination of Vicki's techniques and raw edge applique and Libbi's thread play you would come up with the right combination. You have the skill and the imagination, just move past the fear (which paralyzes all of us at first) What is the worst that can happen? You lose a little material. (also make a copy of the drawing first so if you don't like your first attempt you can start over and still have the drawing. who knows maybe there is a series of dragons in your future, LOL) Can't wait to see it, I hope you blog about your progress. She did such a beautiful job on the drawing that I am so afraid of screwing it up.
ops: I am going to try to keep a photo diary of this one and the next one. Right now she is drawing Godzilla for the other son. I am not very good at applique. I have been practicing though so I am hoping that I can do this one justice.

Take a working copy of her drawings. That way it doesn't matter if you mess up (not that you would, of course) because you'd still have the original.
If the drawing is very large, I hear that there are lots of copy places in the US where you can get a large sheet of paper copied.

Some of the best advice that I took with me from Ricky's quilt retreat in La Veta, is that "doing" and finding your way is all a part of the necessary journey! Don't worry about potential mistakes - it all needs to happen for you to develop into the artist that you want to become! Have fun! Mary Kay
