Hi JoJo
When y0u say the rotary bobbins on the Bernina, are you talking about the 730 and others who have a 9mm stitch width, or the others with the 5.5mm, ie. 630. My 630 has a metal case with a bobbin that 'drops' into it, I was told that it is not a rotary one!!!
Really confused now. :? :? :?

Many places carry them but I think Superior only carries their own thread. I googled and it appeared at first glance that Embroidery Supplies had them for lower than some of the others. Many places carry them so get them from your favorite vendor.
P.S. They also have Magna Quilt bobbins for machine quilting. I have not tried them and just learned about them today. They are low lint, cotton.

If your bobbin case is metal then you can use them. There is a rotary hook system (models (640) (450)) and an oscillating hook system (models (630) (430) (440)) on the Bernina machines. Both types have metal bobbin cases so you should be good to go with the Magna bobbins.
Now on the new 820 and 830, I have no idea about their bobbin systems. I do know that it is a larger bobbin area which may be similar to an "M" size bobbin, while most bobbins are a size L bobbin.

Note: The magna bobbin that we've been discussing is great to use when wanting to do embroidery with your machines. I do not recommend using them for normal sewing or machine quilting. Remember my tutorials are related to machine embroidery so I'm giving you information that I've learned over the years.
For machine quilting, there is a bobbin called Magna Quilt (have not used these yet) or Superior's bobbins (which I have used and love for piecing and quilting or for embroidering lace that you want to look vintage).
P.S. For drop-in plastic bobbin cases (mostly drop in bobbins that you insert from the top of the machine), you would use Clear Glide for embroidery or Clear Quilt for machine quilting.

Hi JoJo
Thanks, that was really quick! Another question if you please! When I was emnbroidering over the last couple of days, got into real trouble, etc. most of it was caused by what I would call 'backspin' (tennis term?) in the bobbin. When I took it out, there was lots of loose thread wound round and it wasnt there when I wound itl Was really careful to put some tension on it to wind smoothly!!!! was causes that????
Thanks

Remind me because I can't remember. Look inside your bobbin case like you are getting ready to insert the bobbin into it before putting the bobbin case into the machine. When you look inside the bobbin case, do you have a little tension spring on the inside of it? It would be pressed pretty flat against the back and you may have never noticed it before. Also do you have a little pigtail on your case that you use for embroidery?

Cannot see the spring, and do you mean 'the finger'? rather than pigtail. ROFL
I was checking out the magna bobbins after reading your advice, they sounded good, BUT, and a big BUT. I cannot find a UK dealer and the shipping for them from USA is mind blowing! 100 bobbins retailing around $30 -$39 and the shipping from $60 -$99 wow. That seems rediculous as they are only small and not the heavy. So, will wait until a UK dealer stocks them!!!!
Thanks again

Email me your address privately and I will mail you a couple to try. A couple should fit in an airmail envelope and not cost too much for me to send to you.

Finger, hmmm... okay finger, pigtail. It's the wire that ends in a spiral that you thread the bobbin thread through on the outside of the bobbin case. That helps to use the finger when doing embroidery. LOL -- I'm so bad, you don't want to know what that sentence made me think of!!!
The spring if you had one would be on the inside. For the magna bobbins that I'm going to mail you, you would not want to have that spring in there. I do not recommend anyone taking that spring out if they have one because I have never been able to get it back in properly and wouldn't want you mad at me.ops: I purchased an extra case to use just for embroidery.

Thanks JoJo
I supposeon reflection, that as they have a magnet in them they are heavier than normal bobbins, plus you can only buythemin packs of 100. So, I will be the guinea pig for the Bernina users!!! and I might have to import them myself if they are as good as you say and others want them!!!
I read your post on 'the finger' and burst out laughing! after I posted it and read it back, I think I was thinking of what you were as well!
I have a separate one for embroidery and it has a 'pigtail'! but I have fiddled with the tension screw tightening and loosening as required (thought it required it!) I tried using the drop method to test the tension, but there must be a knack with it as the bobbin kept on dropping out onto the floor and I spent longer finding it than sewing!ops:
With the latest project, I have been using bottom line for most of stitch out, then the satin border, changing to Isocord in bobbin to match top thread. The Isocord seems thicker to I was changing the tension! Although its OK, its not perfect! plus I have been getting the occassional loops of top thread on top! so tightened up top tension! really confused myself here!!!
Sorry about the essay! But I am a teacher, so that explains it!!
Best wishes
Lynn
