    Using Superior's Glitter thread

Just looking for additional hints on using GLITTER. I am using a metallic 90/14 (new) and have tried the tension from 2 down to 0 as recommended by Superior. I am using bottomline in the bobbin as recommended also. After about 3 to 4 inches of sewing, the GLITTER get stuck and I cannot move the quilt under the needle. The GLITTER shows up on the bottom as if the tension is too loose but adjusting the tension tighter is worse.

Do I need to adjust the bobbin tension? Different bobbin thread?
    Thanks in advance

    Libbi,

I too have some and was so excited to use it but had the same problem; so now I only use it in the bobbin. When I took the superior thread class in May(almost a yr after I got the thread), the Superior instructor said that it depends on the machine, some may have no trouble with it in the top but because of the metallic flakes, she only uses it in her bobbin. Hope this helps. TTFN

      Linda,
So how do you use it in the bobbin? If you want to have it follow a line on the top, how is this done? I quilted a quilt years ago with thread that had some glitter in it and it was very difficult. Then I found out that most people recommend using the thread I used in the bobbin only. But I don't know how to do this if you are using it to emphasize something on the top.

        Frances,

I wish I was that good  but I have only used it for FMQ so far. I would think if I wanted to use it for in the ditch work, I would first baste normally, then stitch in the ditch with vanish thread, then turn it over, load up the bobbin with the glitter and follow the lines...does this make sense?

        TTFN, Linda

edit point.....PS...same thing for following a specific design. Kinda makes it more work as you are basically quilting it 2x, but the results can be stunning. Ricky's Grand finale DVD splains it all.

I, also, had trouble with the Glitter thread on the Bernina. Don't know why?

Is Glitter like the Sulky Sliver? Does it stretch. Sometimes the sulky would work on my 1630 and sometimes not. Some colors work better than other (I find this true of a lot of threads). Try changing tension (I use a second bobbin case on my Bernina). I usually use a metallica needle with the hologram type threads or a topstitch needle. Don't drag or pull on it too hard and watch that it doesn't unwind on the spindle (I only have upright spindles).

I'm wondering if changing your stitch plate would help. I haven't used glitter, but I need to change to a single hole plate for free motion. Might be worth a try.

                This is from Superiors website:

                Glitter
When embroidering with Glitter, use a Metallic or Topstitch (Schmetz) needle, size 90/14. Loosen the upper tension all the way down to a '1'. Position the spool on the vertical spool holder so the thread unwinds straight off from the side (not over the top).

Superior also recommends that when threading your machine to skip the last loop before the needle. I tried it, it does help.

Golly, this post was so quiet for so long I forgot to tell you that it was a machine problem. I took it in to the dealer and the serviceman readjusted the bobbin tension. I also have a second bobbin case to fiddle with. I managed to finish that part of the project with much less trouble. It is still a difficult thread to work with. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've used Glitter with no problems on my Sapphire 875 Quilt, on top. I just reduced the tension to a 1 and used a 90/14 topstitch needle. Also make sure the thread is on a vertical spool holder. I used Bottom Line in the bobbin. Go a bit slower than usual and don't use the machine thread cutter/scissors feature - that yanks on the thread.

I have very little trouble with the glitter now, but did at first. I adjust the top tension to 1 and in my Bernina 830 I use Bottom Line and thread it for embroidery. My initial problems with it were how it pulled off the spool, so I set it up pulling straight off, not over the top (in my B830LE that means through that little eyelet and on my other Berninas that means straight up, not sideways). I have no problems at all with either of my other Berninas as long as I have the top tension loose and make sure the thread is pulling off straight.
