photo manipulation to meet entry requirements?

Here is what was required: The image files should be in High quality jpeg format, images should be no smaller than 1000 pixels in any direction (about 13")and be exactly 72 dpi. This should result in most images files ranging from 700 kb to 2 mb in file size. So two people and two days of frustration we still couldn't get there (not with Adobe photoshop 13, or my husbands fancy apple computer ,my I pad or I phone. This 72 dpi requirement was driving us crazy. (the photo turned out to be bigger than the quilt at 72dpi) When I lowered the photo size the dpi went up instead of down. I have used an older version of Photoshop for years but never run across a DPI requirement. I read up on it and I know what it is and I know that it is supposed to be interchangeable with PPI as listed on the photoshop. I gave up when I asked the curator about it and he suggested that I was not professional enough to enter his Art exhibit., or be published in a book or magazine, with out even seeing my work. ( I have done both of these successfully in the past and I have three quilts traveling in shows right now including the one in question so I can't even have it professionally photographed)
I need to know what the trick is so that I don't run into this again. I can't be the only one who has run across this.

Whidbey, I am sorry I can't help you. I have photoshop, but I have no idea how to change the dpi. I just wanted to tell you I think the curator was rude and shame on him. There, I feel better now. I do hope someone can help you.

Coincidentally, just the night before you asked this I was going through old magazines and ripping out pages of interest so I could throw the magazines away. In the April 2011 The Quilt Life there is an article by Gloria Hansen about resizing photos for show entry that I ripped out but don't really understand. I figured if I ever needed to do it that I would understand it as I went along with the instructions. I think it tells how to do what you need. Her website back then was GloriaHansen.com
Let me know if you have access to this old article or I would be happy to scan and email it to you.

Thank you both for getting back to me.
Of Course I had every issue of the Quilt Life magazine until this summer when my studio needed shoveling out from under. (again) I donated 265 magazines and 120 books to my guild to sell at our quilt show. I only held back a few magazines and they were all Quilt Life but alas this issue wasn't one of them. I did how ever look up Gloria Hansen on her website and found that I had kept her book Quilter's Computer companion. That is a good place to start looking. Thank you for heading me in the right direction. If I find the answer in a form I can understand I will post it so nobody gets stuck like that again.

I have no experience with Photoshop (I use GIMP) but my guess is that you need to resize (scale) your photo. You need to set the resolution (72 dpi) first then choose the image size afterwards (remember to lock proportions). I'm sure Photoshop like GIMP has different interpolation options but I would start with Cubic to see if the image quality is acceptable. You're welcome to contact me privately if you think there's anything I can do to help

OH! Of course that sounds like the answer I was looking for. How simple those few words would have been. I am leaving town in a matter of minutes so I don't have time to try this yet. I'll be back in about a week and this is the first thing I am going to do when I get back. Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!
