Sharon Schamber Video on DSM Quilting
Sharon Schamber shows how she bastes quilts with basting thread instead of pins. She also says that she uses a Japanese basting thread hard to find and recommends DMC embroidery floss instead. Thought I'd point out that YLI makes a wonderful basting thread available in the United States and probably elsewhere. It is called YLI Basting Thread, it comes in an 800 yd reel and usually runs between $4.00 and $5.00. You might be able to find it even cheaper. I use it all the time and love it.

Have used Sharon's basting method on lap size to king size both with thread basting and pins depending on how my hands feel at the time. When I first started this process I followed a suggestion from Ricky Tims and used Water soluble thread, after a few quilts I decided that the WS thread was too expensive and started using my stash of "old" thread.

I have used a combination of. Sharon"s basting methods with boards & elmers glue instead of threead. I am able to keep my all my layers smooth & the glue makes my quilt a bit stiffer so that I am able to quilt it easier. I have never done this on anything larger than a twin size quilt, but I was pleased with my results on my domestic machine.

Thanks for the tip on the YLI basting thread Renata.

Connie, this forum thread started with talking about basting with THREAD instead of pins. I've never heard of basting a quilt with glue to prepare it for quilting, except for the spray basting that Patsy Thompson demonstrates here: learn/classrooms/
Sharon Schamber does baste her BINDING with Elmer's. It is demonstrated in the videos mentioned above.

I us Elmers glue for just about everything that calls for pins. I find that it I get much more accuracy that way, & being the fact that I just about always wash my quilts, it dosen't bother me that the glue can get messy. The two things that I have discovered is, that I NEVER buy cheaper glues, they just don't seem to work as well, and that I wash out the tip of the glue bottle out throughly after every use. Elmers gets pretty cheap come this time of year...just sayin!
