    Batting for a WARM Quilt???

Simply put. Want to make a quilt to keep loved ones warm.

What works the best for a quilt that will get a lot of love and washing and keep them nice and snuggly warm?

    Thanks,
    Clara

What about brushed cotton then a fleece backing

Or maybe a Minky backing? I know you were asking about batting, but the backing can really make a difference, too.

Fleece backing is a great idea. What is Minky backing? My mind went to fur and I don't think that's what you had in mind.

Personally, I think that minky is icky feeling! Not to mention the MESS it makes when you cut it!

Minky is a fuzzy, warm fabric that makes a great backing. It started off in mosting baby quilt colors/styles, but now there are all sorts of patterns and colors. I've just ordered some to use for warm backings for some lap quilts for my mom and my niece. It's best for quilts that are less than 60" wide since that's the width of the fabric. The fabric is thick so a seam would be bulky. The best variety I've found is at fabric.com. Just put "minky" in the search engine. A lot of it is on sale right now.

What about wool batting? I think it's wonderful and it stays so soft even after a lot of quilting. And it' natural so it's breathable unlike the polyester battings. Nice to see you back Clara.

Thanks Rita. Keep on trying. Quilting has been hard to get back too. Once I get going, I feel better. Literally has turned into therapy for me.

                Can you wash wool?

I'll check out Minky, but I'm leaning toward the fleece or maybe even a flannel.

Hi Clara. I made a warm quilt for friends in Minnesota. I used fleece on the top and back, and 80-20 batting. They loved the quilt, but said it was too warm!!??? For MN in winter?? I think I would just use one layer of fleece and some flannel if I had it to do over again. They let the dogs and cats on the bed, so did not want to use just cotton fabric.

I've used flannel for my backing and think it's nice and soft and warm.

Rita, Does a quilt with a wool batt take a long time to dry? I don't imagine you can put it in the dryer. Do you have trouble getting them to dry in your wet climate. I have one and I am eager to try it but I have been wondering about laundering it. Any thoughts? Can you wash the quilt on gentle in the washing machine?

I love wool batting. It is so soft and breathable. I wash it all the time but make sure to buy wool batting that is washable. I don't remember the brand I get at my LQS but most should say whether they are washable. It is my favourite batting.

Quilter's Dream Wool Batting is my FAVORITE batting! It is warm, yet light. It drapes wonderfully, even with denser quilting. It does breathe unlike polyester. It gives a nice loft to the quilt. It IS Washable and can be put in the dryer but I don't recommend doing so on high, only low or medium. Cotton is also warm and does breathe but it makes a heavier quilt, esp if you use heavier fabrics like fleece or flannel.

Maybe the boys will have a summer and winter quilt. Humm.

Lots of cool info. Thanks!!! Clara

Washable wool batting is very nice...warm in winter but cool and breathable in summer.
