Have you used an Aunt Becky device to hand quilt?

I've just heard about an Aunt Becky device. Google it to see it is like a flattened thimble or spoon which you use UNDER the quilt.

I understand there is a video out there to watch it being done and that it is a totally different motion....no rocking......have you seen it? Where is the link? I have googled Shar Jorgensen and Aunt Becky and found that she demo'd it on QNN, but I have not used QNN before and can't find the right show. I understand it is entitled, "Needle Turn Applique" and she demo's the Aunt Becky for quilting at the end of video.

I'd like to see it demo'd before I buy it. Don't we all have enuf tools that we thought would be perfect. And they sit in our drawers in "perfect" shape because we didn't like them?

    Thanks in advance,
    Lynn

Edited: the link is no longer functional so I have removed it.

    Lynn,
Thanks for posting that link. The video was fascinating to me. I want to try using that little tool.

I use a Aunt Becky's and most people do not know what I am talking about  ... I can not hold my hands the same way she does on top of the quilt.. I position my hands as if I am going to use the rocking motion with the needle in the down position.. Then I just push on the needle to feed it through.. I can get avg of 12 stitches per inch with the Aunt Becky.... They are all precise and uniform...

What I like about Aunt Becky is that my stitches are neater and more uniform. If I had known about it a year ago when I started hand quilting my 70+ year old GFG that my grandmother made, I probably would not have tendonitis in my right wrist from constant repetitive motion. With Aunt Becky and a wrist splint like the carpel tunnel folks wear, I think I can get this quilt finished. This will probably be the end of my hand quilting. But, I have a new sewing machine!

I'd like to know where to get such a good thimble with the deep recess at the top. I have no haberdashery or quilting shops within easy reach, and so far have not found that kind of thimble on the net. Can anybody help?

What size do you use? I think I have one that doesn't fit and one that does! If it will fit, I'll send one.

I've seen them at JoAnn's I think..........or Hobby Lobby. That's right, you are in UK aren't you?

I have a thimble from thimblestofit.com that I use for piecing. I got it at the Columbus, Ohio, show a few years ago. The lady contoured it to my finger, and it is the only thimble I've ever had that is comfortable for sewing.

For quilting I use the open cut shape thimble from thimblelady.com or a Roxanne thimble depending on how swollen my fingers are. Roxanne is available from several sources, but you can do a search. I think all of these can be shipped internationally. Hope these help you. Marge

I just went out and bought an Aunt Becky device after seeing that video, but it is going to take some getting used to. I haven't done all that much hand quilting anyway and I am finding it awkward to use. Will it get better, or is it just me?

It will get better and it does not take that long to get used to it... I love mine and it took about 3 days of quilting for me to be comfortable..

Yes, Lynn, being in the UK is the problem. I have no idea what size I would need. Hand quilting is very new to me. I just know that the thimbles I have in my sewing box don;t have that deep recess on top, and the needle slips off quite easily.

Thanks Marge! I've written down all the names and addresses so that I can start searching when I have some time.

I work in a large school, supporting children (11 to 16) with severe behaviour problems. We deperately need more staff in our department, so today my Head of Department and others in senior management interviewed applicants most of the day. They offered one lady a job, and then my boss introduced her to us. It went something like this: 'This is Dave. He is a wizard with the camera, and great when it comes to help in all sports. This is Sophie. There is nothing she does not know about computers. Here is Sarah, our autism specialist, and this is Hannelore. She makes quilts, so we give her the most difficult teenage boys to look after!'
