what info to include on a label?????
I have to admit my labels are simple, but that is about to change. I just put in my first quilt into a competition and noticed they require certain info on a quilt. I would like to create a label that is an extention of my piece, but include any info that any potential future competition might need. Any words of wisdom here, please. Thanks, Clara8Teri

I love the label part. I always put who it's for and my name and the date of course and I like to include a saying or paragraph about why I made it or something I thought during the process. So many times I have looked at an antique quilt and wished I knew something about the person that made it.

I put the following:
quilt name
date it was made
my name
city, state, county it was made
size
sometimes I also put the reason it was made
I incorporate some part of the quilt in the label so sometimes the labels are large; but it has become the "thing" the people who receive my quilts look for first!

Here's what I do. I create whatever label I want - put whatever info I want - and put the label wherever I want. Then, when a show has specific info, or a specific location, I write with permanent pen on a unbleached muslin (calico) - leave it raw edge and stitch it on somewhere between applique and basting. Enough so it will hold for the show. Then I can remove it.
BTW - I often create an embroidered label on my Bernina and piece it into my sleeve. So the sleeve and label are one thing - up top - on the back. Ricky in Colorado where it was absolutely beautiful and 75 today.

Thanks all. I've wanted to put a story in with the inspiration of my piece. Since the pieces usually start from photography I've taken there is usually a story and a lot of times can be quite fun. I love the muslin idea, to satisfy the quilt shows needs. I'll have to play with my Bernina some more and try some stitching. Clara8

Clara, I sign my label with "wrap yourself in love" and my name. I've included why the quilt was made, ie graduation, birth, etc and the date the quilt was given. I've read that some quilters also include washing instructions, which I usually include on the bag the quilt is given in. Basically, you can include anything you like on the label.
Have fun!

I make the label large enough so that I can put 4"x4" squares of fabric inside. If I've only used a few colors in the quilt, I include a piece of each. Often I just include a few. But at least the users will have something to patch it with if they need it. Of course, besides the basic information on the label I add "Matching fabric under this label for patching!".

I started out handwriting with permanent pen for fabric. Thses were all for grandchildren. After getting my Bernina 440 I started making the labels with my embroidery module. I Put who it was made for, the name of the pattern, the year and of course my name and where it was made.. (city & state) Of course none of these are for quilt competition ...just for my own pleasure.
Happy Quilting,
