my first "art quilt" (mini; fabric collage)

Not 100% sure this qualifies as an art quilt, it's a fabric collage that I used glue stick, then raw-edge applique (by hand), then various decorative (hand) stitches and some hand embroidery to further embellish (including 2 tiny attempts at thread painting on the rose in the center of the white square...), and then I hand quilted it over that.

It's small, roughly 8" x 11" and is my "Ode to America" made on July 4th (well, began on the 4th...) because I was missing the US and had no way to celebrate. Rather than wallow in missing out on fireworks, I created this interpretation of the festivities. It's my first attempt at an art type quilt. Well, sort of - I have done 3 other small mini quilts: one was a traditional block, the other 2 were applique but of a traditional sort (a butterfly for one, a heart for the other, where the image was from strips fused together and filled almost the whole space). But this is the first one just for me.

What a delightful way to celebrate the US! I like your collage a lot. The music fabric and the colors give it a particularly lively panache.

Thanks, Betty Jo! I had a great deal of fun doing it, whether it technically qualifies as a "quilt" (even a mini) or not, and even though it is very much NOT squared up....ah, well! Looks cute on my mantle anyway

correction: Thanks, all!!! You guys know how to make a girl feel good!

I think your little qulit is wonderful! And it is definitely a quilt. A quilt just has to have the 3 layers and I believe you have that. Some quilts skip the inside layer and that's where it becomes controversial, as I understand it. But in my book, if you make it as a quilt then it is a quilt!

Thanks everyone! I did have a lot of fun, so I'm glad that shows through. 'Course, I was stalling and avoiding the project I really need to be working on, so..... but 'twas a lovely distraction in the meantime and now I'm back to the serious stuff. Will post that too when I make some decent progress

Bit late to this party, but that looks like a fun bit of crazy patchwork to me, and if it fulfilled a long felt want, all the better 8)
