#1 Ricky Tims (cant believe no one has mentioned him) he inspires me, he challenges me to be better in what I do, he has more creative ideas in his head at anyone time than most people have in a lifetime. - no wonder he has no hair- the energy all goes to the inside. LOL

#2 Vicki Pignatelli - she shows her emotions through her quilts and helps others to do the same.

#3 Barbara Olson - her choice of colors and her improvisational flowers inspire me. Wild Child (a photo copy) lived on my wall by my cutting board all last winter even before I had seen her on TQS.

#4 my friends who do art quilts and inspire me each time with their enthusiasm and their comments on mine

(also a woman who may not be techniquelly an art quilter but her garments are works of art and her spirit is generous -- Etta McFarlalnd)

so happy to be alive and inspired and hope some day I will be on someone else's list dream on girl Ann

[quote="quiltnart"]Taking things a step further -- why are these people your favorites?

First of all, I will say that I consider anything made by ones hands to be art.....my personal favorites are chosen because when I look at their works, they not only please my eyes, but they touch something deep in my heart. The ones that I have been most drawn to lately are Barbara Olson, Mary Fisher, and Ricky Tims . Barbara's work is lots of different fabrics and prints put together in a very mixed up way, but it is so beautiful to me. Mary's work deals with something that I am unfamilar with and her story drew me into her world. I was able to gain an appreciation of her work and an understanding of the people's lives that she touches.....I will never forget it. Then Ricky's work, especially the Rhapsody quilts have all my favorite shapes and flowing curves.....there can be so many components in each quilt, but still have that symmetry because the four quandrants are equal. I love that and I can see new things everytime I look at them. Then when he talks about his quilts and what inspired them, you know they were all made from his heart......and that above everything else is what draws me to an artist.

Whatever project I am working on........quilting or not........deserves that my workmanship be the best I can give it. That is my personal standard, not to be put on anyone else. That standard is a personal thing that each artist must set for themselves. In the end, each person's work will be seen by someone as being beautiful.

I also like Esterita Austin and Robbi Joy Eklow. http://www.esteritaaustin.com and http://www.robbieklow.com Robbi's known as the "Goddess of the Last Minute" and has a column in Quilting Arts magazine.
I've taken a class with each of them, and they're both full of inspiration and energy. I want to be able to design like them and like Barbara Olson. Something in all their work, as well as Katie Pasquini-Masopust, touches me deep inside.

Aaaaaaaaah, Eileen........that's what I call soul-speak. Isn't that why we create??? To reach others with a message, even if you don't identify WHAT it is right away. We all have the same emotions; when we portray that, and another FEELS it - without the spoken word - isn't it awesome?!
And, if we can also encourage others with our creations...... I know that I've looked at creations and thought "Wow, I wonder how they did that"........or "I hadn't thought of that". Then I use my own version of that technique and perhaps inspire someone else.

Check out http://www.saqa.com for lots of different artists. One I forgot until I went to their homepage-Hollis Chatelain. Her quilts make me want to cry sometimes.
I don't mean to leave Ricky Tims out. To me, he's a given on the list of artists.
Let's keep this going-I love it!!!

We are very lucky in this part of the country-there's a new venue for art quilt teachers to do classes: http://www.fiberartworkshops.com/ This is how I met Esterita. A friend and I took a 3 day class with her. We're going back next year to take a class with another artist. We just can't decide which one :?
