I think it is, but I don't have enough experience to know if it works. I just follow the advice of the professionals....

I layered a thin layer of cotton with wool for a wall size quilt and still haven't finished quilting it--it is very heavy--but the reason I did it was the pros said it keeps the wool from stretching. I used just wool on a bed quilt and loved the look of it--it also is a very heavy quilt. I think I would like to do a whole cloth (that is not queen sized) with wool batting and see if my poor old body can stand the weight of it. Oh, and I have found that the wool does keep the quilt from getting crease lines.

Eek! Does this mean that my wool-batt-alone quilt is going to stretch while hanging on the wall?!! I was just getting ready to hang it in a nice, dimly lit hallway until I find out whether it will be going to a show, but maybe I should lay it flat on a bed instead???

I've not had a problem with wool stretching....I think the modern ones are well made and have a good scrim.

Would it matter if the wool was stretchy? Seems once it is quilted into the quilt it most likely isn't going anywhere because the cotton isn't stretchy.

                  Beautiful Connie!

I'd say the wool batt is perfect for this quilt.

Most of my quilts are wall quilts and I have been experimenting with double layering and wool. I think the small quilts (under 30" x 30" or so) do well enough with just one layer of wool. I never heard that about the direction of the wool and stretching. I did not like cotton and wool. I did it on one of my larger quilts and I almost couldn't get it quilted. It didn't behave well in the quilting process and it was heavy. I did finish it finally, but decided not to try that again. After talking with several people, I tried one layer of the thinnest polyester I could find and one layer of wool. That was wonderful. It was light enough to handle, it behaved during quilting, and it hangs straight and flat. I used it on my quilt that just won a ribbon in MQX.

I quilt on my domestic machine. Perhaps those who use cotton and wool quilt on a longarm or have found a different cotton batting. Anyway, I like poly and wool.

Oh, and I spray baste the two bats together. Also, I don't use two bats for every quilt, and if I am only using one, I use cotton/poly 80/20
