Good morning everyone!
I have a question in regards to reducing the size of the templates. From reading the posts, I understand that we can reduce the size of the templates by whatever percentage we would like. My confusion comes from the sentence that says to also reduce the size of the seam allowance.
If I reduce the template, that does not include a seam allowance, do I still need to reduce the size (1/4") of the seam allowance? I'm thinking that the comment brings up an excellent point if the seam allowance is included in the pattern piece. If I'm right, then that is an excellent reminder, I wouldn't have thought of that at all.
Take care and Happy New Year everyone!
Kathy

Great question!
If you reduce the size of a template that includes the finished shape drawn inside the cut edges, all you have to do is draw 1/4" seam allowances outside the finished shape on your reduced copy.
If you reduce the size of a template that does not show the finished shape, draw those lines 1/4" inside the cut shape before you make your reduced copy, then add 1/4" to the outside of the reduced shape.
Hope that makes sense!

Pardon my dumb question, but why do we make the templates smaller if we are just doing 4 blocks? Will it look funny if I just keep all pieces the original size, do 4 blocks, and adjust the borders and applique?
I'm seriously thinking about just doing a 4 block wallhanging and focusing on doing it well without the timeline stress of a full quilt.

Joanna, the instructions for the smaller templates were in response to someone wanting to do the entire quilt at a smaller SCALE.Originally posted by JoLyDoPardon my dumb question, but why do we make the templates smaller if we are just doing 4 blocks? Some of us are making a smaller quilt by simply reducing the number of blocks we assemble, but we are not changing the scale from the pattern.
It sounds like that's what you plan to do.

Another dumb question coming up from me as well , if we make this as a four block wall hanging keeping the
Blocks the same size as the original pattern , do you have to scale down the size of the sashing and the borders
And indeed will the appliqué work at the original size on a smaller quilt . I am feeling a bit stupid not understanding
This, any help would be gratefully received. I would quite like to jump in and do a small wall hanging but I am not
Quite sure that I fully understand how to go about it . Dumb or what!!!!!Yn Harddwch Gogledd Cymru

Here's one possibility for a small wall hanging without changing the block sizes. You would need to make some adjustments in the appliqué borders to make them fit. I would probably redesign the top border so those orange flowers aren't directly on top of the sashing, but this gives you an idea as to what will fit. I saved a copy of the full size quilt as a jpeg, then copied and pasted different sections to get this version using Photoshop.

THANK YOU ANNIS!!! That is exactly what I am aiming for with my project!! I'll work out the border applique when the time comes, but for now nothing needs to be changed except for the number of sashing pieces that I need to make.

Thanks Margo and Annis for the wall hanging idea. After spending 1/2 a day Saturday and all day Sunday on Sashing 1 (as instructed) and have less then 1/2 finished I have decided to go with the wall hanging idea...I'll go with only one Sashing design, will decide on it once Sashing 2 is released.
I knew this would be a challenge and glad for it. Not sure I'm in for a 79 x 79 inch challenge. The good news is that I will have enough fabric for the entire quilt, front and back.

I am thinking the 4 block wall hanging might be the way I could manage learning this techique. I don't have access to EQ software. Does anyone know what the finished demensions of this wall hanging would be? That would help me figure out about how much fabric I need for borders and etc. Thanks.

Lois the finished dimensions of my pieced sashing strips are 5" x 8" so the pieced center of this four block quilt should be 42" x 42".Originally posted by loise98I am thinking the 4 block wall hanging might be the way I could manage learning this techique. I'm assuming the borders would be about 8" so that would make the whole thing 58" square.
That is just an educated guess, 'cause I haven't seen any more of the instructions than you have!

Made a promise to myself that I wasn't going to doing any BOM this year, LOL, yeah, well you know what they say about promises, they're meant to be broken. I am really liking the wall hanging version. Still working on the Majestic Sedona (aka Sedona Star), so a smaller BOM would fit into my year perfectly. I probably won't get started until after March and being that the quilt will be smaller, I don't think I'll have a problem playing catch up. Won't be buying any fabrics though, I have so much stash (batiks and hand-dyeds) that I really am trying to use up.
