Pierogies are pasta circles that are filled with.....cheese, or mashed potatoes, or Kraut, or sausage, or prunes, or cherries, or whatever. They are like Polish ravioli. I think most cultures have some kind of a dough wrapped around something. The Chinese have wontons or crab ragoon. The Poles have pierogies. You can buy premade at the grocery store in the frozen food section. Schwann's have them, and they are good. Is the homemade any better? Who knows! But it does have a nice feeling to know I made them from scratch (even if they are a pain in the you know where!)

Maggie, I "met" pierogies when I first met DH's Polish-American family, and have had 2 (in 25 years) hands-on lessons but haven't yet dared make them myself... seems a lot easier with lots of hands in the kitchen! Besides, the recipe consists of "about a handful of this, mix till it looks like this... " tough to replicate! But my boys love 'em so frozen is a staple in our house!

My DH grew up on pierogies as he was born in what used to be Czech/ and his mother made them for years. I have the recipe but never have made them. My MIL is gone now but I have tried her Pigs in a Blanket (stuffed cabbage rolls). But even though I have her recipe, they "aren't like my mother's" so what is a girl to do? Judy in AZ

I finished my October block on Monday, but since I forgot my camera up in Dallas I chose to leave Houston due to hurricane Ike and I stayed at my sons house, so now I am waiting on him to send it back so I can take a picture of this month BOM, HONEST Heidi

I'm plugging away on October! I thought I'd have some good time yesterday, took twins for Senior Pictures-- forgot the studio would be so DARK between flashes! A bit afraid to look closely at those stitches!

Judy I just got the cabbage roll lesson this year! But I don't have time for any in-depth cooking like that-- I've got quilts to make!

Love the blocks that are done, Maggie, Margo and Ritzy. So speedy! This block is taking quite a while, but I hope to finish it this weekend--or maybe next weekend. Marge

Florence, the cabbage roll takes a lot of time but an easier version is to layer it. Tastes the same anyway. Judy in AZ
