    wash or not

Should I wash the material ? I have all my materials ready and can't wait for midnight. I'm doing Sue Garman's colors.
Snowed in at the Jersey shore. But hope to get my starch on Sunday. This is my first try at a TQS Block of the Month.
I'm a slow sewer, I hope I can keep up.

I'm thinking since all of our fabrics are right next to WHITE in our quilts, I don't want to take the risk of not washing. BUT - like you I am eager to go, so am actually doing a different center medallion, and am well on my way. Yesterday, I realized I wasn't liking my vase fabric, so I drew a new vase on my Stable Stuff, and glued my fabric around it, perfectly. THEN, realized I had not washed this particular piece of fabric. So, I took a piece of my vase fabric, sandwiched it with a piece of the white, soaked it in hot water, then let them air dry sandwiched on a paper towel. There was no transfer or bleeding of color. You could/should do this with a swatch of each of your fabrics if you do not plan to wash them. Don't worry about slow! There are a few of us!!!

      Welcome, Katlady7!
Just be aware that if you don't pre-wash, you run the risk of fabrics possibly bleeding excess dye onto other fabrics, as well as different fabrics shrinking at different rates when you do wash the quilt. It usually isn't a problem with good quality quilt shop fabric, but sometimes even those will surprise us!

Glad to have you join us!

I CONVERTED TO WASH, WASH, WASH....

I use to be a not washer and went years quilting without a problem. Then I made card trick quilt for my grandson and because the fabric was a very dark blue I had washed the fabric..... After the quilt was made and given to my DD she washed the fabric.... in hot water AND NO SHE DID NOT INCLUDE A COLOR CATCHER ! YOU can see the picture of what happened on the link below to the blog.

Yes it was quilt shop fabric and yes as I said before it was pre-washed. In the future I will use sythropol dye set. I know their is another product that might have rescued the quilt but I do not remember what it is... SO WE LIVE WITH IT... My grandson does not care if his BLANKEY is colorful.

        Any suggestions post here

But back to the topic I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU WASH ALL YOUR COLORFUL FABRICS AND TEST THEM FOR COLOR FASTNESS AFTER YOU WASH THEM. Washing would be especially important in a project that will take a year or longer to complete.

That is my story and I am sticking to it
