    Want to try some piping?

Although it's not included in Sue's original design, I have added mini-piping to three places on my Scrappy Ruffled Roses quilt, and will show how I do mine in my January instructions.

In the meantime, if you have access to it, you might want to review Episode 109 with Susan Cleveland for some great tips about making piping: http://watch/watch-shows/video/show-...ing-hot-curves
or check out her book and piping tool here: http://www.piecesbewithyou.com/patterns.htm
Susan uses polyester drapery cord for her piping and strongly advises that you steam it well to pre-shrink it, even though it is polyester.

Ricky Tims' Grand Finale DVD http://www.rickytims.com/online-stor...;category_id=2
shows how Ricky does it. Ricky uses #3 pearl cotton for his piping. It also should be pre-shrunk by steaming well before making the piping.

Have you used piping in a project before? What technique did you use? What kind of cording did you use? Any tips for us?

I have used piping to finish off table runners. It works great for a finish and takes the place of binding. I use a larger cord than what you are using for binding, etc.

There are great machine feet to help with the process.

I use a modified version of Ricky's. I had to figure it out before the Grande Finale DVD was published. Sooooo--I've been makeing it for a looooooong time.
I use mini-piping that is used on children's clothes. I use Viking's mini-piping foot and it is wonderful.
All my quilts have piped binding. My binding starts out at 2.5 inches and finishes around 3/8's.
I do not like thick piping--Fons and Porter use yarn.
Susan Cleveland's is thicker than Ricky's. I used his #3 perle cotton until I found my source at the quilt (also heirloom) shop.

I used a fine piping just before the last border on the 2009 BOM. I had that quilt appraised and the appraiser commented on the piping. I used Susan Cleveland's method and cording. I am finishing up a Fall quilt now and am using Sharon Schamber's technique which she presented as a free video class. She uses yarn. That piping turned out with less "pipeline" or whatever you call the raised part on the strip, but with a more subtle look. Check out the video on her site, she gives hints that were really helpful.
