I am excited and will print my pattern each month but may not be quick to get each one done every month. Thanks Sue, Alex, Ricky, Justin and John.

Just posted my finished January block on BOM site. It was machine appliqued as I'm also plan on doing the star BOM. What wonderful advice given for this. The use of freezer paper for the stabilizer worked wonderful. Never thought of using it before. Can't wait to see the other blocks as they get finished. Jan

I plan on doing both quilts, but have a few bits and pieces to get out of the way first. Also I am waiting for Liuxin Newman's book to arrive in the mail before I start appliqueing anything. Sherren, Sue garman's quilts always seem to have a lot of latitude for adding extra depth with fabric and I am sure you can add some (ps what a gorgeous baby you have!)

Make the quilt your own! If you look through the show and tells from the previous BOMs, you will see a large variety of interpretations that are all beautiful and unique.

What thread do you all use for your Hand Applique ?

I've used the YLI silk thread on a small project and think it's lovely to handle. But since these are frugal times, I'm trying to see if there is an alternative.

On another forum, someone recommended DMC Broder thread and said she like it even better than the silk, which tangled more often. Anyone else whose tried this thread ?

            Thanks !

            Sue

PS See what happens when you don't have your fabric yet---you just keep thinking up more questions

I have been very happy using Bottom Line by Superior (60 wt polyester) which I tried after Sue Garman suggested it in the 2008 BOM. I can thread a John James sz 11 Gold'nGlide Milliner needle without a threader and it doesn't knot up as I sew.

For a cotton option I suggest, Alex Anderson's Masterpiece by Superior (50wt/2 ply cotton)/Frostings. It is a little bit thicker so sometimes I need a needle threader but it sews up lovely. The thread I use depends on the match to my applique fabric so my stitches disappear.

The neat thing is that Superior packages the thread on bobbins (12/pkg or donuts of 35 colors) so you can get a variety of colors in a applique and travel friendly package.

Thanks for the recommendation, Judy ! I love the Superior Threads I've used. That's a great idea to get the Frostings and have the color variety without the volume.

I'm a newbie at Applique, so I need help to choose appropriate thread.

Luixin Newman (thimble lady) says the YLI silk is best. But the Superior Threads bobbins look like a more economical choice.

So which one would be better as a 2nd best choice?
                    Cotton - http://www.superiorthreads.com/shop/...onut/products/ or
                    Poly - http://www.superiorthreads.com/shop/...lors/products/

Yeah I know one has 35 bobbins and the other 36 - but that's close enough to the same price for this comparison.

                    Recommendations anyone?

Karen, I think that either one of those choices will work just fine! Choose the one with the most colors that will go with your project! Have fun!

Kazzy, I have been using Masterpiece cotton for hand applique and I really like it! I now lust after the Frosted Donut, since it would make it possible to carry all my colors at once instead of just the 4 or 5 spools I carry now. I think the cotton is easier to handle than the silk I used to use.

So what is the best method of transferring the applique design when you cannot use a light box?

Debbie, you can use freezer paper. Just lay it over the pattern and trace the different parts of the pattern. You can then cut out the shapes and adhere them to your fabric with a hot dry iron and cut out your fabric shapes. The freezer paper can be peeled off and re-used several times. You can also stack several pieces of fabric together and cut them all out at once.
