    MONTH 3: Ask Questions Here

Please use this TOPIC to ask questions about Month 3.

It is strongly recommended you watch all 8 Videos for Month 3--they are filled with good information.

No questions -- after watching the 8 videos I am definitely going to wait for Barbara's video and use all the tips from both of our experienced trainers to complete month 3. So many new skills to learn -- I will be taking it veeeerrrry slow! If this center portion is not right the whole quilt will be ruined. No pressure.

Very smart, Jennifer! I will see you Friday on the LIVE.

I did watch all of the videos and took my time to join the large sections of the center. My question though as I’m getting ready to insert the appliquéd center to the block… The outer portion of the block was cut at 8 inches and there is no direction on what size to trim it to. My opening around that area is 6.5. Did I miss something?

Page 3, step 7 tells you to trim the center square to 6.5” after doing the applique.

I did the same thing. Thanks for asking so I didn't have to.

In the print kit Century solids navy was supposed to be 9x WOF. Instead it is a fat quarter. A lot more piecing for the small border.

Barbara, I see you are correct. It is such a tiny border I have no problem piecing the four narrow borders. Just be sure to use dark thread and press the seam open. It will never be seen in the quilt.

I did this exact thing on my Solids version when I substituted a fat quarter the perfect color I wanted for the larger outer border. No one can see the seam now and once quilted, for sure, the seams won't be visible. I showed this in the Month 3 LIVE broadcast.

Good morning. As I go to join the triangular piece to the corner unit, I find that I have a significant amount of extra on the corner piece that I need to ease into the triangular piece. I've done two of the four units and both are similar. Did I mess up somewhere or is this part of the difficult process?

The triangle is not supposed to fit the side pieces exactly. It is oversized and will be trimmed down when the center medallion is complete. The outer corner pieces, # 9 and 10, are more oversized than the corner, #11.
See the photograph on the first page of the pattern.

Any idea when Barbara's video will be posted? I could not watch on Friday.

I see it there now. Look in the Videos section of Month 3--it's the last listing.
You can always get it directly on YouTube. Go to The Quilt Show Channel there and look under Videos. It appears as soon as it airs.
It gets added to our website here as soon as Mary Kay is back in town. So looks like she got it added today.

Am I correct in thinking...add the corner circles after you put it all together ... or could I add them before when there isn't a lot of fabric to deal with. Thanks Barbara for all the 'helps'.

Becky added them after the center medallion center was complete. I added the corner circles to the corners before the assembly of the whole center. Both methods work. The corners are lightest without the circles in place so assembly might be easier without the corner circles. It probably doesn’t make much difference either way.

I added my corner circle appliques after I joined block 1 to the right side of block 2's. I then marked my cut lines and cut lines to outer sides of the block sections on wrong side of fabric with pencil lightly. I then removed the only the paper that was in way of appliqueing the circles. It was less fabric to mess with, was glad I did it that way.

For inserting my center square, I hand pieced the seams and corners. Was glad I did they are a little tricky. I don't think I would have been successful with machine stitching in that area. Did not know if this would help anyone

Cherie, that’s a good suggestion. You could hand piece the first few inches of each seam that joins all 7 fabrics together and machine piece the rest of the seam when you get out of that tight spot. I plan to try that when I get to assembling the Print Kit version. Thanks for the suggestion.

What is the measurement of the center square before beginning the pieced borders? I'm doing a different center and want to make sure the borders will fit. Thanks!

The center medallion before sashing is 32” FINISHED. The sashing adds 4” more total. When you complete Month 3 the center is 36” FINISHED, 36.5” with seam allowances.

I explained this in detail in the Month 3 blog. If you’re not reading the blog you are missing a lot of information. Take a look every month:

I guess this is not a question but a suggestion. I appliqued the center block on and it looks good without the aggravation.
