March Applique Block ?
I read Barbara's March blog post about the applique blocks and wanted to ask others out there how they did the "Twirly Balls" block. I'm not a fan of the raw edge applique, so was wondering how others might have done this in another way.
I just ordered the Apliquick products and would love to use those, but an wondering how in the world I would do all of those points.
Thanks to all who share their methods of doing this "Twirly Balls" block.

Suzanne, if you want to use your new Appliquik tools you can get good visuals of doing
points and deep inside V's from show 1912 Rosa Rojas. Also, Kathy McNeil has a couple good you tubes on points. There is a bit of a learning curve. Hand position is important in rolling the edge over. HelenWHelenW

Suzanne,
I used Missie Carpenter's starch method for English paper piecing on the twirly ball block because I don't like raw edge appliqué, I didn't want the extra bulk of two layers, and I didn't want edges from the background color showing. I reversed the pattern, cut the pieces apart, used thick freezer paper ironed to the back, starched and ironed. Missie has a book, and her method works great for appliqué as well as English paper piecing. I'm happy with how mine came out.

My March 1 blog showed instructions for raw edge. To do this block with turned edge, follow those directions except add seam allowance when cutting out the outer points circle, the inner circle, and each of the twirly parts—my sample twirly parts are red.

You might find it helpful to watch Show 404 in which Elly Sienkiewicz shows how to stitch a dog tooth border—hers is straight but the principle for the curved dog tooth circle would be the same.

singer seeker, Good advice from Barbara if you were talking about the twirly block. The other one with a lot of points in March was #9.
I did raw edge applique, but if you are doing freezer paper with starch, you might get some good advice from the Suzanne Marshall
show #203. She has an interesting way, using freezer paper that might work. Good luck. HelenW

A quick note as to what DID NOT work for me. Like you, I prefer turned edge applique. I jumped into the twirly block before seeing Barbara's instructions. I cut out the individual "fan blades" and tried overlapping them with turned edges. It should work, right? What a pain in the neck. I eventually finished the block, but did not enjoy the experience. I used Barbara's modified method for the second one of these, and it was much easier.

I wanted to let all who responded to my post last week seeking help with using freezer paper/starch method for the Twirly Ball block that your comments encouraged me to forge ahead. Even though the stitching is not completed, I’m satisfied with the block so far. I attempted this block eons ago and gave up, so your help is much appreciated.
