    Border size

I have looked at month 2 directions. If my center block is a little small, 16 1/4 , should I make the next border a little wider? Seems like this is the place to get back on track.

That is what I did. I just did the cutting for Month 2 and for Fabric B, I think the size was 1 inch wide and I cut it 1.5 wide. My center is only 16 1/4 as well.

I did the same thing as well. Mine came out to 16" unfinished (1/2" too small), which means my Red border needed to be wider than the pattern. Since a single strip of red that wide looks bad so I used 2 colors. Here is how it came out

Unfortunately, my block came out at 15.5" as I think others have. I did not change my print setting to Custom 100% before I printed off the first set of directions - it was on Fit to page. I am going to add half an inch to my border and half an inch to my floater so it should work out right. I will work it out when I have finished the half square triangles. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for bringing this up! I'd already printed month 2 when I checked the size of my block. It was 15 7/8" and the month 2 papers were small. I just reprinted on
actual size instead of fit to page, and will measure them again before starting to sew...whew!

Mine was a little more than 16.25 inches, so Since the border will make the block finish at 17 inches square, I knew I could make my adjustments here. I planned to deviate from the pattern here and used Ricky Tims instructions in show 1809 to add a tiny piping to my border. Then, took a lesson from Alex Anderson in show 211 to get the mitred corners.

Yes, I am glad I found out about this so early on, the quilt would have been about a foot smaller by the end!

I have a question about the points in the star and the 2nd floater. Should there be a gap between the point and the seam or should it be a flush point like in most points. I thought I had made my triangles too big and then I noticed some pictures seem to have the gap.

Cathy, I think the difference is whether your medallion on point with the triangles sewn on measures the required size of 24 1/2 inches. Your seam allowance will always be 1/4 inch, but if you need more of the triangle fabric to meet the 24 1/2 inches size, then when you sew your floater strip on, there could be a little more distance from the point.
