    Month 4

I'm confused. I just printed off month 4 of the BOM. It says to use the light gray print borders cut during month 2 for border 3. They were cut 2" x 26" and 2" x 28" which would make the finished border 1.5". However in month 4 it says border 3 is finished 3/4". Which is correct the cutting in month 2 or the finished size in month 4. If the finished size is actually 3/4" then the strips cut in month 2 should have been cut at 1.25". Help

I just tried to add the grey border to the center block. The instructions said to cut the strip 2 x 26 and 2 x 28. The instructions said the center block should measure 25" square raw edge to raw edge. The strip is too long. I just finished my foundation pieced borders and they measure 26" long. The will fit the grey border, but the center block is too small. Please help.

After reading what sewmea has said, I'm really confused. I've already pieced all four of my foundation pieced borders and do not want to do it again.

I just read the instructions again. It says to trim the quilt top to 26.5 square after attaching the gray border. . This would then make the gray border 3/4" finished or 1 inch unfinished. My point was just cut 1.25 inch strips instead of cutting the quilt top back to 26.5 inches. I find it a pain to trim I would rather cut and sew the correct size of strip in the first place.

My quilt top measured 25 inches square before adding the gray border.

The problem I'm having is that the center block is 25" square and the first border to be added is 26" long (according to the cutting instructions). This strip is 1" too long. If I cut off 1", it isn't going to fit the foundation pieced strip. The foundation pieced strips comes out to 26 1/2" unfinished which I've already completed. It appears that the center block should have been 26" square, not 25". Maybe a typo in the instructions? I don't mind trimming down the grey border to fit the foundation strip, but I can't add any fabric. It appears I have to try and figure out how to add a skinny border to make up for that 1". What do you think?

It might be that the cutting instructions for the grey strips were to be a bit oversize, In case some people ended up with a slightly different sized central block. I would view the grey border as what Sue Garmen refers to as a floating border which can be adjusted/trimmed to fit your pieced borders in case you need a 'fudge factor'. I agree that it would be a nuisance to have to cut the centre down to size after adding the oversize grey borders though, instead of cutting it to the correct size to start with.

Dalialady you say that your foundation pieced strip comes out at 26 1/2 " unfinished. I would suggest that you need to add grey border to all 4 sides (that is the top & bottom as well as the 2 sides) so that the central square measures the same and then your pieced borders will fit. I think that you are forgetting the width of the top and bottom grey border when you are referring to the fact that your pieced border is a similar length to the cut length of the grey side borderbut I could be wrong.

Just found the video's Sue Garmen made referring to floating borders. It is here in the classrooms https://thequiltshow.com/learn/classrooms/video/latest/bom-2009-sue-garman-sue-garman-tips-for-bom-2009 You will want to view months 6 & 7 (the rest are quite useful too, if you have the time)

I think I am going to fussy cut the centers. Hope I have enough fabric!

This square is so cute and clever. A fabric stash that includes matchsticks and tiny bunnies must be a great collection.

I bought the kit from TQS. Love all the fabrics but especially this navy one with the bunnies.

Uh oh. Maybe I need to make TWO Rajah quilts--the one I've started in reproduction fabrics and the TQS kit version. Quilting really is addicting.

If the designer meant to have the border be a floating border, wouldn't that fact be in the instructions? I am behind you all and am still working on my center, but I am fearful of continuing pending that correct way to do this so I have the correct dimensions. Is there a Moderator who could help?

Just finished Border 3 & 4. The grey border ended up being 3/4" wide finished. I had already precut the borders so I sewed them on and then trimmed. It would have been easier if the correct measurements had been given. Just glad it's done. My center block was 25" square unfinished before adding the grey border.

I was so excited about this project at the beginning. Now, I am not a fan of the pattern. Disappointed in the lack of support. I used to love following other people's interpretation of the BOM pattern. I probably won't renew membership this year
