Just starting the first block and cannot figure out how to
trim the flying geese in the first block. I'm on my second set
of flying geese. Help

Hi 'gnett', and welcome to the forum. Have you looked at Julie Cefalu's classes in the classroom at the top of the page here? And also the last show with Janet Stone shows how to do it. They show you how to do it both with an ordinary ruler and with the block-loc rulers. I hope that helps.
