Is the background fabric cut larger then trimmed?

Hi, is the background fabric to make the blocks and panel sizes cut larger then trimmed down? I know that some of the small units are cut larger then trimmed down and just wondered if the same was true for background piecing. What a well written pattern Janet's BOM is, the explanations are so clear. Best wishes to all

As I recall, the background pieces are NOT cut larger to be trimmed down. I started to do that, but it became confusing trying to explain the placement of the letters with the background fabrics cut larger. So I'm pretty sure I ended up just cutting them to the correct size so that I could explain exactly the placement of the letters. And thanks so much for the compliment about the pattern! I had a little help from my very capable editor, Irene Berry!

Thank you for replying Janet. I'm not a confident piecer, but love doing applique, however your pattern is so well written and all the instructions make it clear to follow. I've completed the star, flying geese and pinwheels and I actually have points where they should be - hurray for me .
      Many thanks and best wishes
