That's probably enough overnight's to tell whether or not you like it. Go at it with the ripper. You'll be happier in the end. How often have you heard, "I don't have the patience to be a quilter." That's balogna! We are impatient until we get the results we want. I think quilting requires impatience.Originally posted by ritzyOh yeah! My seam ripper and I are well acquainted.
Lois--I have been looking at that Q for over a month. I think it is going to have to go, we will see.

YANKEE PUZZLE
Panel Size : 3" x 6-1/2"
Block size 3" x 3" (finished)
Cutting instructions:
Color #24: 8 squares 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" (will be cut down to correct size, but that will be enough)
Each color (#1, #20, #17 and #6) 2 squares 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"
Background: 1 rectangle 3-1/2" x 4"
Each QST must be 3/4" finished, so, cut them to 1-1/4", aligning the 5/8" mark on the center:

Following the rest of the instructions, the finished block will be 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" from raw edge to raw edge.
Then at step 5, sew the background rectangle to the bottom, and appliqué the "Y"in place. I had a 3/4" margin on each side, and 1" at the bottom.

The finished panel from edge to edge is 3-1/2" x 7'.

Z CROSS
Panel Size : 5” x 6-1/2” (finished)
Block Size: 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” (finished)
Cutting Instructions:
#18: 5 squares 1” x 1” ; 4 squares 2” x 2” (oversize)
#13: 5 squares 1” x 1”; 4 squares 2” x 2” (oversize)
#16: 16 squares 1” x 1”; 8 (not 9) squares 2” x 2” (oversize)
#15: 8 squares 1” x 1”
Background: 2 squares 3” x 3” ; 1 rectangle 2” x 5-1/2”
Just a reminder when you trace the 50% appliqué: you have to extend ¼” beyond the dotted line to make up for the 50% seam allowance.

Do the same for tracing the middle of the “Z”.

However, you can’t use the 50% copy for placement: ask me how I know… If you do, this is what you will get:

I’ll tell you in the next post how I handled it.

Step 1: Make 8 HST units using the 2” squares from each (#18, #13) color and #16. Trim the HST to 1” x 1”.
Step 2: Arrange the HST units with the 1” squares to make the blocks. Join the units in rows, and then, join the rows. Blocks should measure 3” x 3” from raw edge to raw edge.

Step 3: As per instructions, using a 3” x 3” background .
Step 4: as per instructions. The units should measure 3/ x 5-1/2”.
Step 5: For the diagonal: On the full size, we see that on one side, the Z is aligned wih the corner of a block, while on the other end, it goes “inside” the block. I chose to center it so that on each block, the Z would go “inside”. To do that, I found the center of the background by folding it, and then, on the release paper as well. I match the center, and marked where the appliqué should be.

I fused the appliqué then join all 3 units.
Voilà:

The panel measures 5-1/2” x 7” from raw edge to raw edge.
