Rosemary! Thanks so much for that link. The tutorial on feathers is great. I only have one problem--I have no idea how big those coins are. Would you please give us a hint? Thank you

Ritzy, I just used a 1" circle. It's probably slightly bigger than that but it doesn't really matter because you might need bigger or smaller ones depending on the project. The main thing is that you use a circle as the starting point.

The penny is approximately 1 3/32" diameter (a shade smaller than 1 1/4") and the ha'penny is 1" in diameter. You can still pick them up on antique stalls, although they cost a bit more than that now and as Lilian shows, they were a common and frequently used template.
Especially for Ritzy, from page 1, 4th post down :P

And you work, 2 diameter's away from the centre line.

Another item that's often used for this is thread spools. You can pick the right sized spool for your project. In the US, I've also heard about using quarters and half-dollars.

Rosemary thank you so much for that, what a wealth of knowledge you are. My Grandmother was a Northumbrian quilter, I inherited a wholecloth quilt from her in the 1970's, just as duvets were the 'in' thing. Oh, I am so sad for what I did to that quilt I can hardly bring myself to think about it. I hope my grandchildren treat my quilts with more respect but I'm sure there will be Karma.
                    Best Wishes Pam
