Superior Bottom Line pre wound bobbins
I just had to come and have a moan on the forum as the quilt shop in my area I find have a history of telling customers miss informed information and sometimes I get a bit cranky with this, one time I heard them tell customers that Signature and Superior threads are the same company so just buy Signature.....so I had that sorted out with a email from Bob at Superior,
BUT BUT BUT I was in the shop the other day and was told by them when I was buying some bottom line pre-wound bobbins
"that you always need to re wind the pre wound bobbins onto your own bobbins as the pre would bobbins don’t really work at all".....aaaahhhhhhhh.......I butted in and nicely said that is not true all you have to do is take the cardboard sides off if your bobbin case is a bit smaller as mine is and I do this all the time with no issues at all. I was met with disbelief really.
As these past few days I have found myself thinking on this and still been a bit cranky about this wrong information been said to all their customers and people spending time re winding the bobbins which is so totally stupid in my book considering why they produce "pre wound bobbins for ease of use" or even worse stopping people from buying this great product at all and then not realising this.
Well I thought I should to send an email, very nicely worded of course, to the shop owner and staff about this issue and explain and tell them to contact Bob if they are still unsure. :x :x   :x :x
Anyways thank god for the TQS forum so that I could come on and have a bit of a vent.....

You just did the right thing. They should get updated on knowledge. I don't use prewound bobbins any longer but I did when I had my Janome embroidery machine and they were awesome. Much more thread on a bobbin, than I could wind on it! Please go on educating your shop.

This is the reply I received back from my email.
And what a load of rubbish......    .....Gee sewing machine brands tell you to only use their needles, bobbins and threads !!!!!!
Hi Jill,
We note your comments and reply as follows:
1. We are a Janome Dealer. Janome certainly recommends the use of pre-wound bobbins in their machines but only Janome brand as Janome pre-threaded bobbins are pre-wound on plastic Janome bobbins.
2. We highly recommend the use of Bottom Line Thread for both using in the bobbin or for hand sewing English paper piecing.
3. We do not recommend the use of pre-wound bobbins on cardboard for use in our machines.
4. We stock the 1420yd spools for our customers who wish to use Bottom Line Thread in their bobbins so they can wind their bobbins using the bobbins that suit their particular machine.
5. We only recommend purchasing and then rewinding the cardboard bobbins if it is a colour that we do not stock in the larger spools.
6. Our advice is precautionary. We highly recommend Bobbin Line and Superior threads but do use the pre-wound cardboard bobbins in our machines.
7. We understand that there are two main causes of machine malfunction in the bobbin area one being the use of inferior thread (which is certainly not the case with Superior threads) and the second being the use of generic bobbins especially in Husqvarna machines.
8. The main reason for stocking the cardboard bobbins in store is for hand sewing, hence the precaution you were given when you purchased the item.
We are pleased that you have no issues with these bobbins however we have had other customers who have and that is why we recommend our customers wind them on to their own bobbins.
It is not a matter of giving out incorrect information. We are giving information we are comfortable sharing with our customers from the advice we have received from our suppliers.

And just goes to show that individual machines can be picky, regardless of brand, and what works for one, does not always work for the next one built on the assembly line. And the shop is trying to cover the widest angle of problems.

They could have suggested to the customer, to try rewinding, if they had any troubles with the pre-wound bobbins, not just say to rewind the bobbins. Just saying it could have been explained better. Not everyone has the same brand of machine. And if we have a different brand, does that mean we shouldn't shop there? Sorry, but it irks me.

{Jilly}..... I bet they take to the hills when they see you coming through their shop door!
Unfortunately you will never be able to convince everybody, even if you know you are right.
Some years ago (in my days before being a Bernina Babe), I was told that you can't used 'Pfaff plastic bobbins' in a Husqvarna machine. I bought a pack of plastic Husqvarna bobbins in a shop, and found that one of the bobbins had 'Pfaff' imprinted in it, not Husqvarna. I very, very carefully look at the bobbins and decided that they were identical, except for the name....... Rolling eyes!
Jilly, you could make a kingsize quilt, heavily threadpainted and quilted with Superior Bottom Line, and then name it: "Look, No Cardboard Sides".From the edge of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood
