What is a BGR?

I have been reading a member blog about BSR and BGR. I have a BSR (and also had trouble using it) but I guess I have been out of the stream too long and have never heard of BGR. :?

Nancy, I'm not sure, but I think I remember reading a member blog recently where someone called her BSR a BGR to indicate her frustration with it, but I can't remember what it stood for.

I don't remember the piece you are refering to, but I reckon that I can add the extra letters in to work out the name due to frustration issues :lol:

I completely understand if it is what Margo indicated. The BSR is touted to be so wonderful, and I have occasionally used it satisfactorily, but total frustration turns it into a BGRRRRRRR! My FMQ skills are quite simple, but they get the job done.

Oh that's so funny. But I am sorry when I hear people are so frustrated with the BSR. :? I love mine and don't know what I would do without it.

I am terribly sorry to have introduced this term, I never meant to confuse members. I re-named my BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator) BGR (Bernina Grumpy Response-unit) because I find its response to my command (moving the fabric) to be quite grumpy most of the times. I have had it for over 6 years and our chemistry is just not compatible. I think I know why I have problems after reading up on how an infrared mouse works. Now I need to find out if the gadget can be adjusted so it works better.
It sounds like I'm not the only owner who is not completely happy with the BSR - it seems very hit and miss. Some are very happy, like Betty and others not so. I have decided after reading the comments to my blog posts that my best course of action is to contact Bernina UK, Bogod, and ask where I can find a tech who is Bernina trained and has experience in adjusting BSRs so they work as they should do on all fabrics not just on solids and low contrast fabrics.
I will add a post to my blog and I will stop calling it names and instead stick with the official name in future.

Marianne - If you want to call your BSR a BGR because that is what it is doing for you, you go right ahead and call it that (especially on your blog). Who are we to deny your experience with your machine. Personally I have been amused but the chatter on this thread, as well as educated. A Bernina Grumpy Response Unit is much politer than my imagined B*gg*r Unit.

Added to which, this is an international forum so not everyone's grasp of English is the same :wink: and it can be fun when folks use local terminology that we can then learn and giggle about. (My surprise that you could 'pull' pork is a good case in point - starts 5th post down http://forum/friendship-triangle-exc...-rott-exchange)

I should have read further in her blog and I would have found the answer. Actually, I think it's rather funny that she gave it a new name. I didn't think of that, but I did GRRRRRR quite a few times. I think I'll rely on what FMQ skills I have from now on.

Marianne, the color of your fabric might also be a problem. We have a very colorful company logo, bright red, orange, pink, green and yellow. About 15 years or so ago our advertising company came up with these fabulous colorful mouse pads with our oversized logo... When the infrared mice came along, we suddenly started having problems with these mouse pads, everyone thought it was the bright red, (incompatible with the infrared), after a few trials we found out that it was actually the bright/sunny yellow that could not be "read" by the infrared mice... We had to make a new design, no we did not change our logo, but changed to more muted colors on the mouse pads, or to a plain background with a smaller logo that was placed where it wouldn't be a problem could possibly be an issue with the BSR, havn't quilted anything with large bright yellow patches... But will try it out.
My main issue with the BSR is that it shreds some of my favorite super-fine superior rainbow threads... But other threads it's sewn perfectly. My main problem is still learning the right tension settings... Havn't really figured these out yet and will have to take lessons from Betty Jo one day, I think she's really got her 830 figured out!

Lotti, That's very interesting. I'm not a big yellow fan, so perhaps that has something to do with it. I'll have to try that out. I have a notebook that I am filling with tension findings on my 830 (my BSR loves the rainbows, so it might be something needs adjusting in yours). I'm thinking of putting it together on my computer in some sort of matrix and would be glad to share once I get that done. Of course, what works for my machine may not work for yours. :roll: There's no question about it, the 830 is a lot more complex than most machines, and the very fact that it is very sensitive to tension settings makes it at once wonderful and complicated. I love it though and the BSR too but I can sure see why these may not be happy solutions for some quilters.

BJ, thanks, if you ever do get around to getting a thread/tension matrix done, I would so love to have a copy as a guide.
As I havn't really had time to play (been trying to finish a few overdue projects - so quickly decided to stick with what works), I'm not there yet, but my notebook is ready and waiting... My bernina technician has so scared me about changing the bobbin tension that I've put this project aside till I have my brother's quilt done!

Oh, and I'm totally loving my 830 - even if there is a learning curve that's in proportion with it's cost . But I will not be giving this baby back, Bernie is mine, all mine and no one else is going to have him! :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:
