Well 1066 was the year that William the Conqueror came over from Normandy and won the Battle of Hastings. (about the most famous date in British history)Originally posted by crocus999I love some of the typos on this forum!! 1064 - wasn't that around Charlemagne or something? ( NOT a history major!)Being born in feb this site puts me back to being a horse, I had been told that I was a snake by a chinese lady, and in some ways the description of the snake fits better - although there are definitely some aspects of the horse in me as well....Originally posted by suehenyonoh bother, I'm an ox.

This site gives your chinese horoscope. It got me all wrong

One thing that seems certain is that I am the baby here - from 1966 :P

When I first moved into my house, I would hear a bird dive-bomb the window about once every 10 minutes. Many did not survive. I talked to the guy at the bird store and he said that they see reflections of the trees in the windows and try to fly to them. He had me put window stickers around on the windows to break the reflections and that helped considerably.Originally posted by ReetzbobeetzI am a bit of a humming bird myself! We have a very silly great tits here at the moment - it keeps flying into our bedroom window. We reckon it is seeing it's reflection in the glass. But it's very cute.

Had a bird problem, too....but they are good-sized birds...quail !! and can take out a window sometimes !!
I have lg windows opposite each other, so now I always keep the horizontal blinds open but tilted slightly so they
don't think they can fly thru.!!! We love to watch them...flocks!...little topknots bobbing away !

Here's a geeky question, Marilyn. What kind of quail? Ya'll out west have different ones from our east coast Bobwhites.
Cathy, are you the expert on treadle machines? One of my projects to "finish in 2013" is to acquire one. I committed to buying two this past weekend and need information on how to work them. They have shuttle bobbins. We could change this discussion to email if no one else is interested, but Lois might want to know, too.

Not geeky at all ! We have mostly California Quail. Bobwhites and Gambels are rare...all were introduced in 1880-1900
These interbreed with Calif.s...and a very sm pop. of our native Mtn. quail. Gamebirds..Hunting season is
Sept- Jan. Only Calif. and Bobwhite are hunted and only in western side of the state. There weren't a lot of them in
"town" but pop. has boomed in recent years. Folks feed them and the flocks can be big. They're cute to watch...
Ma, Pa and 10 to 20 chicks...really entertain. The down side is they dig up grass and beds sometimes and can
eat a lot of cracked grain !! We have to cover seedlings in the garden !! Lost all my peas last year...we were late
covering and have lost beans and onions. So I don't mind eating one now and then !!
Please keep writing about treadles...Mine is done now and sewing with it is fun...if a little challenging  :!:
I want to do a sm quilt with it but not had time yet..Just sewing string blocks now, for practice. Will do pictures one
of these days soon !

I have my gran's old treadle... 193? brand is 'helvetia' (swiss brand, although no one seems to know much of them...) It should be in pretty good condition, she used it until shortly before she moved into an old age home in the early nineties... Was stored in a loft for a few years and has been in my living room for a good fifteen years. But I havn't had the courage to try it.
Would love to learn as much as possible on the treadles in general... So please keep the discussion online so we can all 'listen' in.

Originally posted by suehenyonLimbania, do you feed the hummingbirds in Arizona? One of my favorite bird-watching trips was to south-east Arizona. The hummingbirds were amazing. Good quilt inspiration

We have some hummingbird feeders in the back yard, hanging from 3 olive tress. I haven't seen many hummingbirds though, maybe because there are lots of pigeons that come and eat the olives and make quiet a mess in the back yard. We're planning on spraying the trees to prevent them from bearing fruit. At some point I thought of learning how to pickle the olives or harvest them and take them to a place where they can make olive oil. With all that's going on now, that'll have to wait to next year.Lotti, Kuessnacht - Switzerland
