I ask because my father uses soft oil pastels in his work and they blend beautifully so I am wondering if these are the same. Also, do you do anything to them to make them permanent or is that just not a worry with a wall quilt?
Thanks for the kind comments about my quilt everybody. I should probably have done a lot more lines to be more 'modern' but I used cotton batting and I was worried about it becoming stiff as a board.
Nanapie, I used two different variegated pink threads on the top (Wonderfil and Sulky) - and a variegated red (also Wonderfil)in the bobbin because the back of the quilt is red with black spots. I was amazed at how much thread it used. I had thought that 500mtrs of Wonderfil would be enough but I had to find an alternative which was the Sulky because we can't get the Wonderfil here except at the big show in November.
Rita, the product used for coloring my coneflower was Caran D'ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels. They look and apply just like a crayon, but once you brush on water they magically transform into watercolors. We used a 50/50 mixture of water and textile medium for the brushing stage, then heat set the fabric with an iron after it dried. Just how permanent this process is I'm not sure, so I will use it only for things not likely to be laundered.

Thanks for the info Connie. I don't think I have seen them before but I will have a look out for them now. Limbania, thank you. I was just using up scraps and more scraps so the glow/sparkle is a coincidence and not a well thought out plan. You are all so kind and encouraging. I love seeing what everybody else is doing - very inspirational.

Connie, the coneflower is beautiful. I'm intrigued with the pastels. Did you have any problem with bleeding? Derwent Intense Pencils will work in a similar fashion, but a base of textile medium is needed if bleeding will cause a problem.
Rita, Love the Red/Pink/White. Wow, this color combo is calling my name more and more. The difference in values really adds to just how interesting your quilt is! Well done.

In mid January I posted a pic of one of the quilts (Summer Lake Log Cabin) I had finished in time for the local quilt show and was wondering how I was going to keep the dogs off it when I put it on my bed. Well that problem is solved. When my moom saw it hanging at the quilt show she said that she thought she should keep it for me and put it on the bed in her spare room since her's was a queen size bed and my bed was only a double and she said more people would see it at her house. This is the closest she has ever come to asking for a quilt, even though I have given her several. So the quilt went to live with her yesterday and I can visit it anytime I like.
As a side note I was very surprised and schocked when I saw it hanging at the quilt show and saw that it had a ribbon on it. It got 2nd place in the Large Collaberative division!! This was only the 2nd time I had ever put anything in a show. The first time was about 12 years ago. I had stopped sewing for about 8 years since I had little ones underfoot and just started back 2-3 years ago. First place went to a beautiful Sedona Star quilt!! There were so many beautiful quilts at the show I don't know how the judges could pick winners, I saw a couple that I could not believe did not get ribbons. I am glad I did not have to judge the show.

Congratulations, Teresa! I'm in the middle of quilting a Summer Lake Log Cabin and have another one in the piecing stage. I really love Judy Martin quilts! Yours is just beautiful and well-deserving of a ribbon! I'm glad that your mother likes it. I think that's the most gratifying praise of all!

Congratulations, Teresa, on winning a ribbon for your absolutely gorgeous Summer Lake Log Cabin Quilt. The colors shimmer as would a lake surface on a bright summer day and your border and center motifs truly make this quilt a winner. Enjoy this wonderful achievement and great that your mother will enjoy your quilt as well as you when you visit...all good things!

I thought that I had posted this earlier, but I guess I just had a senior moment!
This is a queen-size quilt I made during the long basement remodel, so it was actually sewn in the middle of the living room!
It went to my youngest son who has just moved to Myrtle Beach SC. The colors remind me of surf and sand.
I quilted it with my computerized HandiQuilter/ProStitcher with an all-over panto that makes me think of rolling surf and the accompanying foam!
He really likes it!

Have you done any of Judy Martin's other quilts from that book? I must be crazy because I am looking at doing either the Snake River Log Cabin, Finger Lakes Log Cabin or Shoreline Log Cabin. Just counted the number of pieces in them and wondering if I have lost my mind (anywhere from 4,500 pieces in 1 to 7,600 pieces in another). I have never tried anything with that many pieces but I just keep thinking - you just sew 1 piece at a time....
