William Morris' wife had a name!

The beautiful quilt Kelmscott Manor made by Joyce Saia was modelled on one made by William Morris' wife........? Her name was Jane (Burden). I actually don't think of myself as a feminist but the credit here being given to somebody only identified as the wife of a famous man really bothered me.

I know what you mean. On the school run, you can easily become so-and-so's Mum, and lose your identity there too. Actually their daughter May Morris is more well known (to me at least :wink: ) than her mother.

Being a bit of a pedant myself I would just like to say that William Butler Yeats sister Lily worked with May Morris and it is thought that she did a lot of the embroidery work attributed to May Morris, including the canopy around Morris's bed in Kelmscott Manor in the UK. I always think that Jane Morris looks so miserable in any photos from the period and in the paintings done by Morris, Burn-Jones and Rosetti. According to Lily Yeats it was not a happy household with Jane Morris sulking a lot, May Morris having temper tantrums and William trying to smooth things over. Interesting history, I think?

OK, that is a seriously cool website (the V+A). Kaffe Fassett did a book about quilts inspired by the V+A.

Rosemary, I do think that you could pull off a quilt that would astonish and awe. And if you document this in a book I for one would buy it right now! I have a very large book collection :shock: and as far as I know, there is nothing in recent US books that covers this method.
