Hi Nonnie, I remember the first time I went to free motion, I too worried that I'd ruin the top. But I think your daughter may be right, the only way to do it is to go for it...

My FMQ is not perfect, but it is getting better with every quilt I do. The recipients of my quilts love it, they don't see the occasional skipped stitch, or the fact that the stippling looks a little chaotic. They are amazed, and ask whether I program the machine to do it. So I've learnt the best thing is to do it, and then step back and admire my work by seeing it as those who are receiving the gift see it rather than as a quilt critic.

Enjoy the experience, do it with love, and you can't go wrong!

You just need to jump in. Perhaps get started on a muslin sandwich when you first get started just to get a feel for how fast to go and how to move the quilt around smoothly, without jerking around. Wear those rubbery tip gloves, and try to stay relaxed. I always get into trouble when I start tensing up and not knowing where I need to go next. So I've been using chalk to kind of plan it out, even if it's a few viney things to keep my quilting evenly spaced out. Also, it seems that I have naturally fallen into swirly designs. That is what I am most comfortable doing free form. So....develop your own style. It will just happen as you get more into it. Best of luck! The FMQ to me is the funnest part of my project!

Actually doing FMQ is different from watching the DVDs ... I have watch Patsy Thompson, Patchwork School house, Sue Nickles and several other teachers.... all that information goes out of my head when ever I try and I forget all I think I know.

Anyways tomorrow is D day and I am going to get started.
