pictures on fabric
I tried the putting a picture on fabric with Margo's suggestion to use freezer paper to run it through the computer, and it worked like a breeze. I will watch the show from last week again and again. I want to learn more! My first attempt was not great, but it was fun! It is a picture of my Granddaughter Hope on jet skis. She wanted a pillow. The colors are better in person.

Something similar but in a different vein. I need to foundation piece my arcs for a Double Wedding Ring Quilt. I was going to print them on Ricky's Stable Stuff. Normally, I print my foundations on my laser printer but it's old and the memory won't hold enough for these foundations. That means I need to use my Epson ink printer. Does anyone know if that will wash out of the Stable Stuff when I wash the quilt? My other option is to take it to Kinkos or another print shop and see if they have a laser copier and will let me copy them onto the Stable Stuff.

If you do a test with white fabric, you should learn that too! I think it probably depends on the kind of ink that your printer uses, but I don't ever have trouble with my ink-jet printer's lines.

Well I had to go to Kinkos for something else today so I took my Stable Stuff with me. They said I could try, but they only buys stuff that is made for their machines and it might not work. So I did a test print first to make sure it didn't change the size then I put a sheet on the tray. The machine gave me a choice of what kind of paper it was so I picked something thick, crossed my fingers and hit print. It worked just fine! When I go back to do them all (I had a show meeting to get to) I'm going to ask if I get a discount since I'm not using their paper. It won't be today because I have a signature quilt to finish and quilt guild stuff to do. :-(

Frances, if you are using an epsom printer, with the durabrite pigment ink cartridges, you will not have any problem with the print running, provided you iron your fabric to help set it, or so I have been informed by my techie friend at Stone Creek Silks who is currently writing a book on the subject. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi Frances
I've just got the reply back from my friend Ruth and she saysThe following is an excerpt from her book about testing your printer/inks, which is essentially what Margo was suggesting, print one piece to try it out and see if it works. As for your question about Durabrite and polyester, I don't know about the Ricky Tims stuff but I've printed on to polyester satin and polyester sheer and it washed without any problems but you do need to make sure it's thoroughly dry before you wet it (that sounds a bit odd but you know what I mean).
Hope this helpsIf you want to test the ink in a printer you already have, just
print a piece of untreated fabric and let it dry thoroughly –
see the chapter on ‘Direct Printing’ for how to do this. Then
wash it - a quick, gentle hand wash will do . If some or a lot
of the ink comes off then your ink is dye-based. If it looks
pretty much the same then your ink is pigment-based.
Rosemary
PS small advert - her book will be coming out this autumn, but I don't as yet know the title. Available at http://www.stonecreeksilk.co.uk
