Fabric file?

    Fabric file?

Does anyone have a great way of knowing the fabrics you have so you can take it with you when you go to shows, events, seminars..shopping..
Some sort of a FILING system?
Pasting swatches on file cards? By color? By theme?
    Using a notebook?
Something that is small enough to travel with.
Is there a product out there in the world of QUILTY stuff..???
Let me know what has worked for you>
    Thank you
    Kate

I bought a note book that is meant to be used for business cards. I was going to use it for this purpose but I am just not that organized.

When I was working on 2009 BOM and was using my own fabric choices, I cut small pieces of fabric and put them on a large saftey pin. I carried one with all my blue fabric and one for yellow, which were my main colors, and was able to find the rest of the fabric I needed without a problem

I don't have the time to be a perfectionist and have a portable fabric filing system. I just cut small pieces of the fabrics and pop them in a little plastic bag. And if I feel like doing things in a more organized way I tag several fabric pieces together with a basting gun.

I can't believe 70 of you read the question, but 3 answered with ideas.
          I guess I am crazy.. I'm a bit retentive..
I ended up just cutting a little piece from all my fabrics and just glued them on
index cards. I also marked the swatch if I had fat quarters OR yardage.
I'll put them into a little photo album you get at Target and take it with me..
I took me about 3 hours to go thru stuff. I actually threw some pieces away.

When I'm looking for fabric for a project, I staple a small sample of the potential fabrics on a piece of paper. Usually, I use a piece of notebook paper so I can write how much fabric I have, the pattern and how much more fabric I need. I doubt that I could ever be organized enough to document every fabric I have!

Bring 'em any way that they don't fall to the bottomless pit of my purse. Usually just a safety pin.

My sister made a traveling "file" out of those small plastic photo albums. index cards fit in them and she puts fabric samples, magazine cutout ideas. project yardage and so on. They are very inexpensive at Walmart and fit nicely in your purse. you might even find them at a $ store.

Thanks to all for the ideas. It does make it easier..A little bit of time, but now, when I get a new piece of fabric, I'll just snip a piece off and stick it on my cards.
