Random Thoughts -- Quilting DIVAs
I have been thinking for a while about how Quilt Teachers / Lecturers are very enterpernurial (sp?) as well as creative, talented, and imaginative. I personally could never do what they do... (too much of a crumdgion (sp) for one reason...)
Yes they make the quilts but then they go out and sell their ideas and techniques to us ( who are rarely satified and want more)
Their product is THEMSELVES as well as their quilts.
- They first have to be creative and come up with ideas few others have done or though up...
They have to present their ideas in logical .. repeatable step by step instructions... even to dunder heads like me.....
They have to be nice even when they do not feel like it... I rarely suffer fools lightly, and can not smile when someone whines at me.
I just could not do it. ... I have to give them a lot of credit.

Or keep an old-fashioned dictionary in book form next to your computer. It's a little slower I guess, but I like it.
About your 'ramblings', Anna. There are very few jobs where you don't have to put up with other people, so I guess if you choose to make a living with anything remotely quilt-related it helps to have a positive relationship with the 'average quilter'. Saying that, I have actually come across a couple of 'divas' that left me disappointed. They were running workshops with an unnecessary amount of arrogance, as if they were doing me a favour to just be there. If I pay for something I expect reasonable service. On the other extreme, I have also come across 'big names' who are enthusiastic, share what they know, are obviously very well prepared when they run a workshop or give a lecture, and leave me with a feeling that my time and money has been well spent. So I tell my friends, they tell their friends, etc....... Never under-estimate the power of word-of-mouth in a fairly close-knit community.

My 1st quilt festival at Houston found my friend and I in a class with a teacher who was way more interested in the media attention she was getting. We struggled with what we were doing and didn't get any help. That has been the only negative experience I've had in any class and of course Ricky was super.
