Watching old quilting videos/dvds, WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY
[b]I am in the process of cleaning out my VCR... and transferring them to DVDs.... I inherited a bunch from a freind when she cleaned house and I taped a bunch myself.....I use to tape shows while I was at work just to watch when I wanted to relax but hubby was hogging the big TV to watch sports....
Since VCRs are defunct and scarcer then hens teeth... I am converting my old tapes. Right now I am retaping Kay Woods series from 1980s... she uses a surger, the earliest form of rotary cutters, poly batting that puffed ... and some reallllllly old looking rulers ... nothing like we have currently...
I am wondering if anyone made quilts like what she was showing back then... the techniques were primative... no matching seams, haphazard sewing... ( THIS IS NOT TO DISPARAGE KAY as she is a really nice person, but the style on all the old tapes seem really laid back.)
The thought of serge seams make me think of lumpy bumpies.... Nancy Ziemen shows also used them in old tapes.... I can not think of how you would quilt something like that.. probably just tied...
BESIDES, Simply Quilts, FONS AND PORTER, and QUILT in a Day...what other QUILTING tv shows were available?
I talked to a girlfriend in Texas and she never saw Kay Woods but she talked about other quilt stars from her state, QUILTERS I am not familiar with. I figure there must be other HIDDEN STARS/DIVAS/ ICONS out there in PBS. ( APPERENTLY PBS had a lot of local shows/ self produced shows not available nation wide.)
What old TV quilting show got you started in quilting??? ...Helped you on the way to becoming a master quilter???? Who are the QUILT ICONS FROM YOUR STATE????
I AM HOPING this will be a fun and informative conversation.... I can hardly wait to hear about the quilt shows in other countries!

Well, as I started quilting before TV was invented, I can't help you there. But Alex's show was always beyond fantastic, and took quilting off the farm. TQS is a warp leap forward, and I can't fathom how it could ever be topped! We had NOTHING in the 70's, 80's even. So it really RAGS me, LADY, when people have da noive to complain!!

Wow, what a trip down memory lane, my first experience with a TV show was Georgia Bonesteel on PBS which is probably where I got hooked. My local PBS has really cut back on any quilting shows, just the Fons and Porter currently. Then there was Alex's Simply Quilts, still watch reruns. I agree TQS is light years ahead of anything I have seen, so TQS keep it coming! Pat

Personally I think TV SHAFTS women in general and older women in specific. Any thing an older woman would like to see disapperars or is on at a ridiculous time of the day... ie FONS AND PORTER is on at 5am on Saturdays. Although I heard rumors it is on Monday afternoon when I am at work.
I have to suffer through sports all the time... which caters to males especially young males... What the TV PRODUCERS forget it is the women that usually balances the house hold budget and determine what is spent and where. I use to support PBS every fundraising events... I no longer do cause they stopped all of my favorite shows... I am reduced to DVDs... YES I have all of TQS and many other quilting DVDs, but I am on the hunt for more shows.

LadyRags, would you be willing to share how you convert VCR recordings to DVD? I have lots of Simply Quilts tapes that I'd love to convert but don't have a clue how to go about it. Can you do individual shows if you don't want everything on the tape? Thanks!

Well, we aren't all the same, and that's what makes the world go 'round!I'm an older woman (retired) and a quilter, and I LOVE the sports shows. I'm an avid watcher of basketball, football, baseball, tennis, and golf. I search out the sports shows on weekends.
I also love the quilting shows. I record and watch "Quilting Arts," and the Eleanor Burns shows that show on the cable RFD channel, and "Sewing with Nancy," which contains a lot of quilting segments.

I have used two methods to convert to DVDs
I use an LG video/ DVD dubber to convert from video to dvd. You plug the TV in like you would a standard DVD player... put the Video into the slot. Put in the correct type disc... each machine will tell you what type to buy. Follow the directions in the manual and hit the buttons. Some of the newer machine are one button dubbers in that you only push one button to do the work.
I also have a SONY DISC MAKER for my movie camera, but you can also hook up your TV to it according to the manual. This makes disc even my m-i-l can play on her older model DVD player.
What ever you do .... do not loose your romote control or manuals for these machines.... my son took mine and lost them and now I am having trouble working them. I will have to go back to the manufactures and see about getting replacements. You need the correct manufactures remotes to run the machines correctly.
Each system cost about $200 whan I bought them but I bet the price is coming down... I have also seen other (less expensive ) versions of similar machines but did not investagate to much as I already had several pieces of equipment.
good luck to you... if you have a tech savy teen... make them do the set up work.... That is even easier...just do not let them have the remotes.

Shirlm, I bought a gizmo for $50 at Microcenter to convert VHS to DVDs. I am planning to make dvds of all the old family tapes for the kids but haven't started yet. It is made by honestech. I'm glad you and Anna mentioned Simply Quilts because I have loads of them on tape that I never thought about converting. Anyway since I haven't done it yet I can't really recommend this but at least you'll know there are less expensive ways to go about it. KarenLyndhurst, Ohio USA - East Side Suburb of Cleveland, Ohio

I am currently listening to Alex's podcast on the computer as I work on my computer. I am wondering if I can burn a cD so I can play it in the car... is their a copy right issue with that?
I just want to be able to listen to a cD while I drive cause radio tunes are not my thing... I like Talk Radio and books being read... Alex's pod cast would be great to listen to...
DOES anyone know the answer to the copyright issues?
Can podcast be burn to a disc... I am not that computer literate that I know ... I know kids burn disc of music but I have never done that.

Hey thanks Ladyrags and Karen for the info on converting videos.
Ladyrags, since you like talk radio, have you heard Pat Sloan's new radio show on Toginet? She interviews someone in the quilt industry every Monday afternoon (also downloadable later). Plus if you comment on the show on her blog you are entered in a giveway from the guest.

Jill, I really DO wish all those talented Australian quilters would get online with their talent!!!I watched the Georgia Bonesteel shows in the 1980's--she was really a ground-breaker with her lap quilting as you go method. I have several of her books and wouldn't part with them, either. Judy in Torrance
