I have had my Kindle since February and I love it for reading, but wouldn't use it for quilting books. I am an avid reader like many of you, and it is wonderful. We even read the newspaper on it...and I never liked the newsprint on my hands so that is a plus!

Vote me as a relic too. I like the feel of a book in my hands. Turning pages gives me a feeling of accomplishment (OK...it takes so little to amuse me).
However, my husband is the techie dude. He reads books on his iphone.
I would think that books with pattern pieces such as applique books..you would have to print those off anyway. So I would rather own the book.

There are definately times when owning the hard copy book is probably better - any time you have to make copies such as for applique or paper peicing for example. Also I just don't think it would work all that well for children's books (or any primarily picture book) because part of what makes them so special is the over all size and brightness of the illustrations, which I just don't think you could get from a screen no matter how good it is. But for just day to do fiction or informational reading... oh yeah I really want one 8)

I've thought about getting a Kindle, especially since I heard they have one that will read the books aloud, but I don't have fast enough internet to download any at home. If they ever run cable up the mountain here, maybe I'll get one... but then I'd have to *pay* for books (I generally use the library nowadays)...

I was just reading about the Kindle on Amazon. You don't have to connect to internet to download. Sounds like it is wireless and talks about downloading any where. But maybe that still wouldn't work for you. Hubby has been dropping hints. At first I thought it was a crazy idea, but after reading the positive comments here and seeing a couple different folks on the airplane with them, I am reconsidering.

"Whispernet" is included with the purchase price of the Kindle. It's a wireless connection and the Kindle uses it to connect anywhere (provided there is reception). There's no ongoing fee for this.
Or, you can hook the Kindle to your computer and download from there. I think even dial up would be fine for the Kindle.
