    Flannel Fabric

I am making a quilt for my dh. I would like to use flannel for the back but am not sure where to purchase or if I should look for a particular manufacturer. Any help would be appreciated.

I am currently making a flannel quilt. Just started.I have been collecting 1/4 yds of different flannel for the past month. Have about 20 pcs. Last nite I had cupons for Jo-Anns and got 6 yards of flannel for the back 50% off.. I do not plan to put anything in the middle. I'm thinking of doing that with both sides. Does anyone think that will be too much. :?: Also my flannel was 4.99 yard with 50% off. No brand name that I could see.

Be sure and pre-wash your flannel fabrics. I've seen them shrink as much as 2" per yard! Different manufacturers' might shrink at different rates, so you wouldn't want them to do their shrinking in the finished quilt.

Thank you for the help. I will definitely prewash.

Debra, I look for soft flannels. If it's not soft when you buy it, it won't be soft after it's washed. Have fun!

The very first quilts I made I used flannel for the backing. (7 - Trip Around the World lapsized quilts) I bought it at my LQS. I made the quilts just like any other quilt with batting between the top and backing fabrics.

Since they were my first quilts, and I was doing a simple quilting design, using my sewing machine, I don't know if it was harder to quilt with the flannel or not, nothing to compare it to. I was struggling with the quilt in the machine, but just thought it was because I didn't know what I was doing, and didn't think about it being the flannel.

At that time, I wasn't paying attention to manufactures, I just picked out something that went with my quilt tops. But I also picked flannel that was soft to the touch, because I wanted these quilts to be used, and snuggled under.

I will probably use flannel for another quilt some day, but I have a hard time finding it to go with the tops I'm making. I usually just use a fabric for my backings that goes with those of my top.

Just as I thought it sounds as if I need to be careful of the flannel I purchase. I will have to order online since I live in an area with no LQS. In fact our WalMart no longer carries fabirc. I did find flannel at Fabric.com that will work but no idea who manufactures it. I will be doing grid quilting with my walking foot so the quilting should not be a major issue (I hope). Thank you all for your replies. I will post a picture when I finish.
