Teacher for a day... OR creating a new addict??

What unexpected fun I had today!! I had called a girlfriend I rarely see & told her she should come visit while I still had a guest room after Christmas, before it reverts to a sewing room again, and luck was with us this time, our schedules worked! So she drove over from Charlottesville (about 90 miles) and spent the night. It was the first time she'd gotten to see most of my quilts (either in life or pics) so I did a good show & tell last night, then today, I said "what do you want to do?" and after a bit she said "why don't you teach me how to make a quilt!!??"
Looking back, her Mom used to have an antique shop that carried quilts & racks etc., and one in-between job she had was at a fabric shop!! I can't really believe she hadn't already gotten hooked!

So we looked at a few books, and then she decided she'd like to try a raggy flannel quilt. I looked on the shelf, and there's a darling little pack of flannels just sitting there--I'm sure I've had them for 3 or 4 years at least, and not gotten around to using them. Some scrap batting, ironed out the flannels and off we go, (teaching how to rotary cut mostly, 'cuz she does know sewing basics.) I gave her a small mat, an extra rotary cutter, extra ruler, (things I'd gotten from the "great yard-sale giveaway" last year) lent my spring-y scissors for the fringe and a walking foot from my old Kenmore in case it fits her old Singer, and voila! A quilter created! I think we spent about 3-4 hours at it then she had to go home. One of the neatest things was, when we were packing the stuff up, I looked at one of the fabrics, and there among the little pink flowers were a bunch of sayings about friendship!! Meant to be
So now, if this "takes", I bet I'll be seeing her a lot more often!!

She did so well thou, she knows all the steps but I cut and iron.
This is a link to my facebook page I made a little video clip of her
    Thanks Jean

She did so well, when we showed my mom she started to cry, and said I am not crying because I am sad, I am just so happy gramma. It was a truly touching moment.....Jean

Florence, I hope you get to see more of your friend through quilting. I have a girl's day out planned next month with some of my quilting friends...we're going to a quilt show about an hour and a half away.
A couple of years ago, I gave my DM a beginners quilting class for Mother's Day. I took the class with her!! When she saw the supplies list, she kind of freaked. I calmed her down and we went in my quilting studio and I gave her a rotary cutter, mat and ruler. She was thrilled and I got to share my love of quilting with my mom and we got to spend the day together! Now we go to quilt shows and fabric shopping together! This way I get to have mom to myself sometime!!
            Happy Quilting,

My girlfriend went out and bought a sewing machine in Nov. but has not been over to learn how to use it yet, she keeps saying I really want to learn, but I think she is afraid, she is 1 that does not like to mess up and I think thats what she is worring about. If my 5yr old grand daughter can do this I think she can too...Jean in 32 below 0 Kenosha WI
