Great Teachers

Last weekend I was blessed to be at A Quilters' Gathering which is a quilt show & conference here in NH.

And, once again, I had two great teachers !

I think of Alex as my 1st quilt teacher since it was her teaching and sharing other teachers on Simply Quilts which began me on my quilt journey.

Who have some of your great quilting teachers been ?

Judy I'm so jealous! Where I live in South Mississippi there just isn't much quilty stuff around. I do have a LQS here in town though. I'm so glad there's tons of stuff on-line!

We're lucky to have quite a few great teachers in the area...

1. Crystal (and funny, I don't remember her last name!! She works at the local quilt shop p/t and does fantastic quilting!). Crystal has wonderful energy, a great eye for colors, and instructs with ease.

2. Mary Lou Hallenbeck - what an amazingly creative mind! Not only has she taken single fabrics and made unbelievable quilts with them and has created her own style of art quilts, but for classes, she easily walks through more complex techniques - and better yet, has multiple solutions to 'oops'! LOL

3. Sue Nickels - I was actually able to machine quilt on my little machine in her class! My feathers eventually really looked like feathers LOL Sue is patient and explains very well - and of course, she makes it look easy heehee

Great question!

Libby Lehman - I've taken two of her workshops and she is an awesome teacher. Not only is she creative, but she knows how to use the sewing machine to it's fullest. She shares all her tips and techniques and has a wonderful sense of humor.

Barbara Olson - Very creative and really teaches you how to work with value and fabric.

Susan Carlson -- You can't appreciate her work until you see it up close and personal. She's a true artist and it is amazing what she can do with scraps of fabric. I did a portrait of my son in her class and everytime I look at it I think "I can't believe I did that". She pulls out the best in you.

I've taken a couple of others, but these are the workshops where I learned and enjoyed the most. In 2009 I am scheduled to attend three workshops.... Ricky (in LaVeta), Jane Sassaman and Sally Collins. I can't wait!

Freddy Moran. For those of you who haven't heard me say it before :wink: I love this woman's playful energy, her support of my expression of my own style, and our shared LOVE of color!I STILL giggle when I look at her books - that's always good :lol: Isn't it serendipitous how just the right teacher comes along at the right time? Freddy was a huge catalyst in setting me free to be me after some crtiticism, which can be a killer - especially in the beginning.

Rosemary Eichorn: I developed more of the contemporary/art quilt style in her collage class. She taught many new tips and tricks with paint sticks, lutrador, tyvek, etc., as well as composition of our pieces. Another FUN class.

Linda Anderson: My art quilt friend here in Spokane who has been SO very gracious in teaching and encouraging me. Even fabric shopping with her is a great experience - love to watch how an artist "thinks". No, she doesn't have a website (yet), and no, she isn't a member (yet); but, HEY...the new gift certificate offered by TQS when we renew our membership..I'll give it to her :!: :lol: The point here is look at how we teach and inspire each other! We all have something to share. I hope to pay it forward.

If you ever have a chance to take a class from Marsha McCloskey, do it. Not only is she knowlegeable, but she has the ability to teach and inspire others. She gives lots of advice and doesn't assume you know things. I've taken classes with other teachers who are very creative and talented, but they really aren't teachers. Marsha is.

Pearl Perriera of P3 designs is also an excellent teacher. She is methodical, thorough, and encouraging. Her specialty is applique using starch and freezer paper.

I took a Jacobean applique class from Pat Campbell. I love the way it looks, but I haven't done it in years.
I've also taken classes with Robbi Joy Eklow and Esterita Austin. They are both very dynamic teachers in different ways.
And I don't want to forget to mention that I took a workshop with our own Mickey Depre. I absolutely love her!!!
All teachers and workshops have so much to offer, whether or not you ever use their techniques. They open your eyes to trying new things.

I was at a workshop yesterday with Bonnie Hunter. She's so fun - lots of energy (even after being on the road for more than 2 weeks), very positive and knowledgeable.

Only a few more days and Ricky, Alex, and Libby will be in AZ for the Super Seminar. Any suggestions from anyone who has attended these? Can we bring cameras? How about a notebook? Will there be time to knit? Or is every minute an opportunity to learn something new? How about walking shoes or a pillow to sit upon? Will we be sitting for hours and hours without a break? Thanks for any advice. Judy in AZ

Ricky, Alex and Libby #1! Great experience and didn't sew a stitch! This is a lifetime mountain-top experience! DO NOT MISS IT!

At 2008 Quilt Festival Carol Bryer Fallert. Great teacher. Out of this world beautiful fabrics! Wonderful technique. Supports others teaching her techniques. Very active creative mind!

Sharon Schamber (books and videos) have taught me sooooooooo much!

Jinney Beyer and Linda Franz for the absolute BEST hand piecing techniques!

Judy, just be sure that you are well rested. You're sitting most of the time but it's easy to fall asleep if you're over tired. The seating should be comfortable, the seminar will probably be at a nice place. I brought something for taking notes but everything was provided and I didn't write anything in my notebook. You might want to bring some money if you have a hard time resisting Ricky's beautiful fabric. You'll be able to get their books autographed so bring money for books too! Every single penny you spent on that seminar will be worth it! I hope to go again someday!

Also bring a wrap or sweater - regarding room temp, ricky plays to the majority - all the above advise is excellent!

Hi Judy!

It's almost time for the seminar! When I went to the one a couple of years ago, Ricky had 3-ring notebooks with information on all of the topics he was teaching. I understand that he now has the information in a spiral bound workbook. I just made notes in the margins of the book, but I think I will take some of the post-it notes (the larger ones) and make my notes on those. You are welcome to use what I bring if you like.

Also, we did have breaks between sessions so you can stretch your legs and what not but there is a lot of "sitting". I'm sure there will be time on Friday for your knitting as there is a long dinner break between the seminar and the concert.
