DONATION OF SEWING MACHINE TO THIRD WORLD WOMEN
I just saw this on the fly and it stopped me in my tracks, unfortunately I only heard and saw a little of it. I am planning to find out more information when they post the links on their web site later today or tomorrow. I did not hear the name of the DONATION ORGANIZATION. If you have more information on this group please POST ON THIS SITE. I am sure others have heard about it.
ON GMA Weekend this morning they talked about an organization that will allow a donor to pick the donation that is to be given to a 3rd world recipient. The person talking about the program said there is a GIFT CATALOGUE and you can buy / donate... various items/ animals to donate. The 3rd world recipient is taught how to use the item ( Care and raise the animal breeding it to expand their herd.) I
Included in the items to be donated was a sewing machine. The speaker ( from the donation organization) talk about how a simple sewing machine ( treadles and basic electric, donation cost $250 ) help to EMPOWER disenfranchised women in the third world country. (As if quilters need to be told about the power of a sewing machine to improve our lives. ) These woman/ girls ( many widows or orphans ) are taught how to make clothing, quilts, etc.
I would like the ladies of the message board to challenge their quilt guilds or groups to raise money for this worthy cause and donate sewing machines during 2008. As an individual quilter we may / may not be able to donate much but, if every guild donated just one sewing machine we could change the lives of thousand of women around the world.
Thank you and Merry Christmas
More information about this organization will be forth coming as soon as I can get the link from GMA-WEEKEND.Tags: None

Anna, what a super idea. Can you imagine how much good 25,000 of us could do? If each of us just gave a dollar, that would be 100 sewing machines :!: I wonder if TQS would act as a donor recipient to pass on the money to that organization. What would be the chance of that, all you wonderful behind the scenes people :?: Gloria imagining the possibilities.

I was on my way out the door, to quilting class, when I saw the show. I just thought it was fate to see this show about the importance of a sewing machine in some woman and family's life when I was going to class.

Here is the link for a donation. If you cannot afford to donate on your own, maybe with your friends / guild you can raise the money to sponsor just one sewing machine.
Poverty-stricken girls and women — including orphans, widows, and single mothers — are often unable to support themselves and their families. Your gift will provide a sewing machine and training to help a girl or woman in a country like Mali, India, or Bosnia to achieve self-sufficiency and hope for the future.
Here are the other links so you can investigate it for yourself. I was move by the tought of QUILTERS ROCKING THE WORLD by raising money to give other quilters/ sewer a stand in life.
