This quilt is very special to me, but I also made one for each of the children with just their drawings on it! So many ways to do something like this!
It would also be fun to have an annual theme! Nancy, ask your grandson to draw a Christmas tree (or something???) and date it, then repeat for several years to have a permanent memento of his growth as an artist! And....maybe hearts for Valentine's Day? And pumpkins for Halloween?
Don't make it too structured though. Some of the stuff they come up with on their own is priceless!!

Chiming in a little late, but I did a quilt with my son's comic strip (he draws one) printed on fabric. For that, I did straight line quilting through the main quilt, and did outline quilting around the main parts of the design on the comic strip blocks, much like has been suggested in this thread already. I used a coordinating color, and it is holding up very well to many washes -- it's been done about a year, and the dog sleeps on his bed, so it gets washed often.
The other idea, you could do a simple cross hatch like Margo suggested and if you are overly concerned about the thread/quilting detracting, you could use the mono/invisible thread in the top. I did a quilt for my youngest that needed that, and it worked really well. It's not been washed as often yet, but so far it's holding up.
I am sure your client will love it, whatever you do!

These are great ideas that I would have never thought to do. Thanks so much for your suggestions. Now, I wish I had thought of this when my son was young. I only have one piece of his artwork, which is a self portrait he made in high school. It's professionally framed and hung in our stairway landing, so it's one of the first things people see when they enter my home.
By the way, you can get printer ready canvas fabric sheets at office supply stores to print artwork for framing.
Thanks again!

Thank you all for your help. I felt at ease when I received all your input. The quilt turned out beautiful. The lady huged me and asked me to make another one for Mother's Day for her mom, I was so excited. It took me 27 hours to make it and I charged her $200 and she didn't bat an eyelash!!!!! A little more saved for a long arm!!! Yeah!!! Thank you again. If I can figure out how to put a picture on my gallery, I'll do so. Still trying to figure out all this stuff. I did put it into my etsy shop. http://www.arsartndesign.etsy.com Once again, thank you so much. You are all super!!!
