How do you attach prairie points to a binding?

Does anyone know of a tutorial online that could help me with attaching prairie points to a binding - I mean to hang on the outside of the binding, not the inside.

    #2
Sorry, I don't. But I think I would sew them between the quilt and the binding...then turn the binding to the back.
Does that make sense ? Prob'ly would topstitch the edge to make it lie flat. Maybe some body has another solution.

I've never done it, but I think you sew the prairie points to the top and batting, facing the center of the quilt and leaving the backing loose. Then fold them back and whip stitch the backing to the back of the prairie points. Then the prairie points replace the binding. But this is just a guess....

Yes Nancy, I reckoned it must be something like that. Maybe there's a reason why people don't do it much? :?

            Hi Rita,
If you go to You tube and type in "binding a quilt with prairie points" you can watch a video .....Binding a quilt with ruffles or prairie points by Randa Parrish.
I think it may be what you are looking for. Good luck

That's a great tutorial for if you are attaching a continuous prairie point border Anne - but I just wanted to add 3! I found another one which looked really interesting too for anybody who is interested.

But still not quite what I am looking for.

Then you must invent it yourself  . How about making the piece of binding where you want your prairie points from strips of fabric where you put the prairie points in between, so as you attach the binding they will stick right out?
Hope to give you an idea of how to approach it and then test to find the measurements needed for those strips.

Norma, thank you for that suggestion, it's definitely worth a try. In the meantime, Rosemary (PosyP) emailed me with a class on Craftsy that seems to include what I am looking for so I will be taking that class ASAP.

Thanks for all the help everybody.

Rita, There is a TQS video 1001 with Susan Cleveland about prairie points you may find interesting starting at 28.50.
                      Great ideas, beautiful quilts.

Thanks Anne. I did watch that one first but she doesn't show how to attach prairie points with a binding. I have been looking at the Craftsy class and it looks like if you have prairie points then you don't have a binding as such you just turn in the edges.

                          Rita,

Not sure exactly what you are wanting. So, I will share what I do.

I have played a little with prairie points and binding combination. Here is a picture of a quilt with them both. Sometimes I pin them to the quilt first and then attach binding as normal. Usually I will sew the binding on the top and then flip over and finish the rest. Sometimes I will sew them on first, so I don't have to mess with the pins, then proceed normally with the binding. I use Susan Cleveland's tool and I can get tiny tiny points if I want.

Post a picture when your done. Would love to see what you do.

That's such a great quilt Clara! I know how to attach the prairie points on the inside of the binding it was to do with the ones that hang on the outer edge of the quilt that I was interested in. I will post a photo if I ever do get them done.

Rita, I've never done it, but I'm thinking you have to make the binding in two pieces and sandwich the prairie points in the edge seam, or you could attach a narrow binding-like border and then attach the prairie points, and then attach a narrow border-like facing. Might that work, or am I as clear as mud?
