    How would YOU quilt these?

    Hi everyone!

I'm now starting my second-year with my long-arm machine (not one day has gone by that I have regretted my decision to buy!). I've made several custom-quilted baby quilts, two-full size and lots of charity baby quilts. While my skills get better (very slowly), I still struggle on selecting a pattern to quilt.

Here are two projects. Can you tell give me some suggestions on how to quilt these?

    1) This will be a round tree-skirt. Would you do a stitch in the ditch and call it done? Or would you do an over-all and what would you do?

    2) This is a very old quilt I pieced many years ago. How would you quilt it?

    Thank you!

On one of the shows, we had a person who talked about how to make decisions on quilting based on function and two other considerations, can't remember what they are but it was a good show. How about an over-all quilt of trees on the crazy quilt. Ditching would take forever. Is this a potential heirloom? If not, it may not be worth the effort.

Same with the other quilt. Do you want to custom quilt it? How much time do you want to put into it?

Actually, I don't mind doing either. Since I'm so new to this, I learn a lot from doing ANYTHING. Do you have a suggestion for an overall pattern for the flying geese?

I've been longarming for over 10 years and while I have a pretty good idea of what to do on quilts, sometimes I still wonder. I say this so you can know it's a journey and each quilt will help with the next ones.

On the tree skirt, I'd do something christmas-y in gold thread. What do you like? Classic like holly? or whimsical like candy canes or trees? There are plenty of nice pantos out there that would be perfect for this. Or if you want it less christmas-y, quilt a swirly allover on it. It'll look great either way!

On the blue and white FG quilt, ask yourself these questions: Is for my bed? Will it be gift? Or will it just be a throw to cuddle in on the couch? If it's for a bedroom that is shared by a husband, you might consider a panto that is not too feminine. Swirls, stars, leaves or other generic designs work well on this kind of quilt. Use a taupe thread. If it's for a woman as a gift, something a bit more feminine would work. A Feather panto or flowers even. I would not custom quilt this unless you really want the practice on custom. Also consider using wool batting for a bed quilt... very yummy!
