I'm one of the people that has a bigger thread stash than I do fabric stash. Machine embroidery uses a LOT of thread. I've ordered cheap and I've ordered name brand. I really like Superior threads, order from them all the time because they are fast and always have the color and weight I need, and they have a flat shipping rate in the USA. I've also ordered Threadart thread (good prices) and had no problem with their polyester. Some people have called it bad names. Not me.
I don't usually use rayon as a go to thread. A consideration with machine embroidery is the size of the spool. Does it come on a cone? Spools don't go very far.
"Try Me Specials" Do you like them? Sometimes the amounts of thread on the spool are smaller and there is no choice in color. I'm curious to know if anyone reading the forum uses this and from which company.

My LQS no longer chooses to carry Superior (although they are always my THREAD OF CHOICE) and I'm very loyal to Dr. Bob etc. They explained to me it is because of Superior's decision to sell directly to the public and cut out the LQS.
I just wanted to post that here and see if anyone else is hearing that. Personally, I'd rather order from them anyway as NO LQS can carry a supply of EVERYTHING they sell, so why not just buy direct?
IMHO.

Lynn, we have a couple of quilt shops within a stone's throw from my place. They all carry, at a minimum, King Tut thread by Superior, a few colors of Bottom Line but nothing else by Superior. None of them have said they would not carry it because Superior sells directly to users. One shop in particular, just opened its doors in January of this year, and they carry King Tut as well. One shop only, which is a fabric store with a quilting section, sells King Tut at 25 percent above MSRP, so even when they advertise a 25 percent sale on all notions, their products, in essence, are sold at MSRP but are advertised as a sale. Now THAT is insulting, IMHO. I either purchase my King Tut at other shops, or directly from Superior.
I'd be interested to know what threads your LQS does carry--are there some quality choice left to pick from there?

I'm one of those "bad" people who generally just orders thread online. I support my LQS (everyone who works there knows me by name), but don't feel that I have to give up my options just to support them and it's really hard to carry a full line of thread in a brick-and-mortar store..
I use a lot of Superior thread, but my favorite 40-wt thread for quilting is FilTec Glide, which I also order online from the company. I've seen it a lot at quilt shows, but the price is always higher than buying it direct and the colors are limited. If you order from FilTec (bobbincentral.com), then shipping is free if you buy more than $75. I don't know what the shipping is for less since I alwasy make sure to buy enough for free shipping. My favorite thread for tight background fills is Superior's Kimono 100-wt silk thread.

The last time I was in a certain LQS near me (23 miles one way), I bought some Isacord thinking I should buy something from them. It was about $4.00 a spool more expensive than Red Rocks.
We have other shops about the same distance away who carry different threads. No one ever seems to have exactly what I'm looking for so I shop online & let UPS spend the money on gasoline. I'm bad because I'm enjoying not having to pay sales tax (6%) online while that lasts.
The two other LQS stores in my neighborhood do get my attention when I'm shopping for fabric, just not thread and notions. I had to hide my eyes while I was in one today...omg, the color gods have stepped up the gorgeous colors recently. Maybe I'll hit the lottery.

i buy only on line because in the states is much much much inexpensive then here.
especially if i know some one come to visit europe.
other wise i buy a poly here sorry dont know the name....still more expensive then yrs
i bought from superior thread directly, then i discover that in amazon there are much less expensive
threads. so i ordered from there too, i took the advice to order isacor as well.
we will see i cant wait until july that my freezer paper and my threads will be here ( as well stabilizer, notions, fabrics ....)
poor people need to carry it for me, but it is only once..
