Mary, I must commend you on your perseverance with you DWR quilt. It is fabulous and as everyone else has stated the red binding definitely sets it off. I started on (by machine) a decade ago, last year I finally bit the bullet and gave it away (unfinished) to one of my guild members. Way to much curved sewing, couldn't handle it. So glad you stuck with yours. I know the bride and groom will treasure it for years to come.

Mary, congrats on the joyful reception for your masterpiece! May I pick your brain? I have an appliqué wallhanging that I am considering hand quilting. What batting and backing did you use? We're you happy with those choices? Thanks for your input!

Connie: I used Quilter's Dream Select, mid-loft thickness, and a multicolored William and Morris cotton print by In the Beginning and was very satisfied with both. My preferred batting is wool, but I generally use cotton for gift quilts.

Nancy: More control over the curves is why I chose to hand-piece. I don't have near the mastery of a sewing machine than I do my 10 fingers so hand-piecing was far easier. For self-encouragement I told myself that If you can hand-piece even one seam, you can do thousands. As further encouragement, a friend reminded me that you can eat an elephant one bite at a time.

The red binding has gotten more attention than any single aspect of this quilt. I think it's just perfect!

                  Thanks for the nice comments.

Mary, why cotton batting instead of wool for gift quilts?

Connie I generally use cotton batting in gift quilts for two main reasons: 1. Wool needs more tender care than cotton. 2. People may be allergic to wool. In either case, I feel I'm being considerate by using a batting that requires a tad less care. Wool batting is also more expensive, which is a reason for not using wool in every quilt. When I do use wool in a gift quilt, it's for people who have expressed a liking for wool's qualities.
