Originally posted by ZarahMost everything on this subject is said already, but I want to add that the material that gives you the texture you want is the right for your project. I don't understand why people are so shy to using silk. It much more strong than you think. I have been dyeing silk scarfs and my first is about 12 years old. I wash it in the machine with my other clothes and it behaves very well.
As for mixing I just finishes a quilt where the background fabric is silk and the appliqued items are cotton. It is quilted with invisible thread, cotton thread and polyester thread, so I mix as my heart says to do. I wish I could post it, but I have not taken the photos yet and I need daylight to do it. I hope to do it tomorrow. The quilt is a birthday present and will be delivered on Sunday.

Sorry, I did not manage to post it yesterday. It's a quilt for a friend turning 50 who says that the very good memories he has from his life has to do with water. On it, in it whatever. That's why I called this quilt Life of Brian. Size 22.5" x 18".

Norma, your quilt is gorgeous! The quilting is exquisite. Love the background fabric. did you hand dye the silk? I'm sure your friend will treasure it.
B J, I'm looking forward to see your quilt when done. Will you be blogging or posting the development of it?
Rita, thank you for posting about Deborah Kemball's book. I'll be adding it to my library. Lots of inspiration in it

Norma that's a beautiful quilt. The background fabric is lovely and the images you have sewn seem perfect to me. I love the little boats so reminiscent of childhood - they look like they are seeing off those things in life that weigh us down. The quilting is lovely too. And the label is just perfect - a beautiful decorative anchor and the perfect title. Congratulations.

Thanks ladies.
Yes I hand dyed the background silk. I don't remember if I did it on the flat fabric or I had it in a jar and just dropped some colors on it. It's two or three years since then and a lot of things happened in between  But I love the sheen of it and when the light changes I think it resembles weather changes
On to the next quilt, another birthday present.
